Opeth - Deliverance

Each song is amazing. They actually came out with Deliverance and Damnation in the same recording session. Mikael's style is half heavy and half mellow, so they decided to take the mellow songs and put them on Damnation and put the heavy ones on Deliverance. He had tons of ideas beforehand, but only about 2 songs were fully written before going into the studio. They wrote the entire two albums in a chaotic ten day recording session. The lead singer was literally writing more songs in the other room while they were tracking the drums. It's incredible how each song is as good as it is considering the time constraints they were under. The singer says he'll never do that again!

Built to Spill - Perfect From Now On.

Amazing songs, with perfect guitar sounds. The strats are so full. Everything just sounds beautiful. IMO the perfect strat tone other than Hendrix & Vaughn.

Neutral Milk Hotel - The Areoplane Over The Sea - For the songwritting and daring engineering approch.

The Microphones - Mount Eerie E.P. - Great indie recording, incredible character.

Dismemberment Plan - Emergency and I - The consistent and brillant songwritting

Osker - Treatment 5 and Idle Will Kill - Records I grew up with and went underappreicated (and now they're no more)

NOFX - The Decline - It's and 18 minute song written by a punk band. And everyminute is great.

Ted Leo - Tyranny of Distance - Its lofi greatness, In my opinion he's todays greatest mod rocker.

Wilco - Yankee Hotel Foxtrot and A Ghost is Born - I don't think I need to say anything.

RX Bandits - Progress and The Resignation - Greatest songwritting ever, Taking Ska/Reggae/Dub/Punk/Rock to new levels.

Thats all I can think of at the moment. And its not in that order either....

weezer "pinketon" - amazing songs and totally raw sound.

rasputina "how we quit the forest" - three chicks with cellos, and half of
it is heavier than anything korn will ever think of doing.

the living end "roll on" - like the stray cats on crack, ten times better
songwriting.

flaming lips "soft bulletin" - singlehandedly changed how i looked at
recording and songwriting.

that's pretty good i suspect. i'm REALLY looking forward to seeing what some people answer to this thread!!

Actually...TimorousMe you're albums are some of my favs too.

I first hated osker when I heard them. Then a couple years ago I heard their last album, and thought, "wow, this awsome song writting." Unfortunately I they broke up after that album. I wish they would have released another album

The Resignation and Progress have been pretty ingenious examples of song writting for punk/ska/reggae. Although The Resignation is a blunt example of overcompression. Althought the hugh compression greatly enhances their raw style. I love their guitar sound so much. Unfotuntately I hate the snare sound in Progress. But the song writting is so good, they have the best melodies and singer in punk. I hope they start recording again. They've been touring for the last 2.5 years!

I think the NOFX-The Decline is classic. I have it on vinyl and it's awsome! It's NOFX at its best. The lyrics are actually meaningful, which tends to be semi rare for them.

I would actually like to add Bowie-Hunky Dorie and E.Smith-Figure 8. Do I really need to say anything about these?

DUDE! I have the decline on vinyl too...

Yeah the snare on progress is way to jazz-y. As far as the over compressionon the new RX bandits CD, they recorded that record, for the most part, all live so naturally any deprecation in quality I think is made up for by the awesome tightness and realness of the takes.

Also, Osker played at the first real punk show I ever went to so I'll always be fond of them (even the old stuff). Fifteen is another one of those bands that always stuck with me.

The compression thing is true...that album is so perfectly performed. You really can't ask more from a band, and the compression is worth it. And I saw them after the Halfway Between Here & There album came out at little club (Cobalt Cafe) in Canoga Park. So good.

I wish the Rx Bandits stuff came out on vinyl. Crying or Very sad

Pink Floyd Dark Side Of The Moon
Alan Parsons

Heres the studio layout as written by Alan himself

Great engineering with some groovy effects for it's time. Consider that money, with it's in time cash drawer sample, was done with tape, not digital.

It will always be my fave.

1. The Beatles - Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band (the mono mix)
2. The Beatles White Album (stereo mix)

There are many other albums that I love, but I have to admit these will probably be my top two for the rest of my life.
