Guitar recording question

Post by snuffinthepunk » Fri Feb 11, 2005 7:07 pm

(since there are so many drum questions I thought i'd switch it up =P)

when you mic the front of the cab AND the back, what does that tend to do for your recording? I can't say that I know the sound when I hear it seeing as how I've never done it. does it simply thicken it up, or is it more than that?

Panned apart, its basically a very neat way of adding 'depth'. Itll still sound like one, but much more open. Panning is everything.
Oh, and flip the phase. If you dont, youll probably want to jimi hendrix your guitar into your DAW or tape deck or w/e

yeah, I figured I'd have to flip phase. so basically, you're sayin it's pretty much the exact same sound at the back of the cabinet? If you just want to thicken it up, wouldn't it be easier just to run a copy of the original signal back into an open i/o via the patchbay? It would certainly cut down on possible phase issues.

dont think of it as front and back, just consider it as two mics on a cab. micing the rear of a speaker isnt terrible different from micing the front if you are close micing, you can achieve similar tones with a close mic front and back as you can with two mics on the front of a speaker in different positions on the speaker. Most people that tend to mic cabs behind however, are trying to grab some of the resonance of the guitar cab, which is an entirely different discussion all together. Give it a shot, you'll see for yourself. What it does for the recording is based on a)what you want it to do and b)where the mics are.

Sweet, that totally answered my question(s). Thanks both of you! Now onto my next question:

What is the craziest thing you've ever done to record guitars?

I balanced an amp on one corner to achieve the reverend billy g tone.

we have a really nice natural amphitheatre out behind the studio (read also: septic mound) that has a very cool sound to it. i've put amps outside and mic'ed them from damn near 40' away for stellar reverb. we ended up building a stage back there and have had some parties and good sounds...

I haven't done it yet, but I'm dying to try this at some point.

The P3 Reverb Unit.

The plan is to sneak in to work late on the weekend with recording gear amp and guitar.... Go to the 3rd level of the parking garage and fire it up... Really want to hear what a cranked amp sounds like recorded in an empty parking garage.

I love to mic the back of an amp. I've only tried it once on a cab and I really didn't like it too much; but I mostly have experience with a early 80s Musicman RP115 (1X15"). And it sounds awsome with a Groove Tubes GT33, a 57 in the back a couple inches away from the grill, and a baby bottle of about 4' for space. It works pretty well, but of course you need to watch out for phase between the GT33 and 57. I guess any bright SDC would work on the back of the speaker. Really cool oompht out of the back mic.
