ampex atr-700 problem

Just got an ATR-700, I'm testing it out. Its acting like there is no tape on it; the transport won't budge. I'm sure it is threaded , there is plenty of tension on the tension arms. I've tried both a small and large real, and still nothing. Maybe I just have a bad transport???

Looking in my ATR-700 manual, there are a buttload of fuses on the power supply card. Worth a check....

I had trouble with mine, I couldn't get it to go from the front panel. I finally figured out the transport buttons were shot, so I had someone make me a remote. All is well now.

It would be kind of odd for EVERY transport switch to go bad.

Disconnect AC power and remove the center rear cover (7 screws). The power supply board runs from side to side about midway up. Not saying a fuse is the culprit, but easy to check. While you have it open, look for something obvious like a dislodged internal plug.

I see 6 fuses, wouldn't know a bad one if it threw rocks at me.

Bad ones usually have a burn on them.

Make that 7 fuses. Everything looks normal from here, can get any access to the buttons.

I pressed on some of the connections now, some of them were a little loose, but not so much that it would seem to make a difference. I of course only got the ones on top.

The guy who sold it to me also sent some replacement parts, including the board that the fuses are on, and the board on the back of input/outputs. Those fuses are saudered in, both in the unit, and the extra board.

Well, if you don't see any "smoke" inside the glass fuse housing, you're half way there. Inside of each fuse is a little thin wire running from end to end, and sometimes you might see one which is not intact. However, an ohm meter is the best way to test.

I'm NOT saying a blown fuse is the likely culprit, just something to knock off the list of possibilities.
