Groove Tubes MD-1 mics

Post by soundguy » Thu Nov 03, 2005 9:56 pm

Anyone have any kind of idea what these are worth these days? I have a pair that I bought new in '97, thinking about selling them however I havent half a clue wether or not the landslide of crap mics GT made after these has ruined the perceived value of these things or not.

If youve never heard these, they are really cool.

I use mine all the time. One of my favorite tube microphones for sure.

They re-issued the MD1a with a different capsule, and a few other "refinements" that are probably bottom line based only. Has there ever been a "refinement" that was actually a refinement in pro audio?

Dave, let me know when you are selling them...

I have one of the newer ones. Bought it about 1.5 years ago. It's actually pretty nice. Maybe it doesn't compare to the old ones, but compared to every other condenser I have in the same price range. It wins.

I bet. I was just harshing the use of the word "refinement" when a manufacturer decides to "fix" something that wasnt broken in the first place....

I really dig the MD-1a mics. On guitar cabs with an Ashly SC-50 comp. Or on certain vocalists like Mike Watt it works just right: http://hootpage.com/makingofmiddlestand ... 040209.jpg

Super reliable too. I wish I had a second!

Man, We should have used that for the track I did with Watt....

When I mixed it, I just made it sound broken anyway though....

I have recorded some of my favorite male rock vocals with that microphone. I simply LOVE it. That is probably one of the few "sleeper" mics out there. I really would choose it over a 67 in some cases, and I HAVE chosen it over a FET47, a CMV563, a TLM 170, a C12, blah blah.... For real though, that mic is amazing.

Hip me Joel.....What stuff did you do with Watt? It was the Double Nickels record that got me truly interested in knob twidling in the first place. I had a conversation with Ethan James, back when, and his take on tracking and mixing will always be a benchmark for me.

Thanks,
Erik

Just one song, on the new "book Of Knots" record. It is not out yet. it features Watt, Tom Waits, David Thomas (pere ubu/ rocket from the tombs), and a ton of other people....

Just wanted to mention that I have a MD2A (minus power supply) listed in the Buy/Sell forum. It is a more expensive version of the MD1A with a 3 micron diaphragm by Josephson (same backplate), also has a pad control to attenuate the sensitivity of the capsule.

Best,

James
