For ease, skip any kind of dimmers (there ARE expensive ones that don't create RFI, but try this) and just wire in extra light switches and repective outlets. One switch can control low lights, another brighter, and maybe full on lights for breakdowns and cleaning (it's hard to vacuum in the dark). I do this and being able to set the mood with a flick of one switch is great.

Yeah, dimmers are really noisy which is a shame as i really like them. I can't deal with bright lights or direct overhead lighting, it's always lamps for me, diffused lighting.
The large print giveth, and the small print taketh away.

Another thing to keep in mind if you go with lamps/Xmas lights/lava lights is that you can wire the outlets they are plugged into w/ split outlets, meaning you can have a lighting circuit with one switch to control, say, the top half of all you're lamp outlets, while the bottom half is hot all the time for amps, etc. Saves on dimmers and running around switching off a bunch of stuff individually at the end of the day.
