Ethan Johns

Post by vvv » Sun Nov 06, 2005 11:17 am

Just read the interview of one of my favorite producer/engineers.

2:00 AM, I had to go and listen to Heartbreaker for the 100th time; I had wondered about that drum sound!

Makes me wish I had a band...

Thanks.

And some of Ethan's DNA....

And his studio....

It's one of the best interviews I've read!

I don't think he mentioned it, but I read that the forthcoming third Ryan Adams CD of the year is essentially Ryan and Ethan, much like Heartbreaker.

Kings of Leon have a pre-release EP - the first thing they did. It sounds friggin AMAZING, on of the best recordings of rock in the last decade. But, that being said, I don't think either of their albums is on that same level.

OK, I have to disagree. Ryan Adams album sounds great. The songs are boring and uninspired for the most part, but it SOUNDS great. Ethan did a great job. The last Ben Kweller record and the Ray Lamontagne record are amazing, great records. The guy's got ears, and he can play some tasty drums too. The fact that he's got the balls to do it live without a control room tells you something right there.

He is on my list of producers as a reason to buy stuff; the Tift Merrit record (1st, Bramble Rose) is also excellent, although I first learned of him with Whiskeytown.

i have to agree with the "pro ethan/ryan" side of the discussion...johns is a purist, and with those golden ears/genes, and an ENTIRE life of watching his father understand a vision and sound before it's played is an unbelievable blessing....not all of us have it, so we indulge ourselves with his mixes, and cryin ryan's albums....oh, wait a minute...he just released another one...i really dig the approach of really capturing the performance...quite honestly, i'm glad we all have different opinions, it makes us reconsider our view, and possibly find something we may have missed...(now, if we can slow ryan down, and have him put out less music annually, so it doesn't come across so diluted..)

The new Ryan Adams record "29" is awesome. Ethan Johns is at the helm. Those two together = great stuff. Sounds like Ethan is on drums again. Beautiful recording. Check it out (when it comes out)
