DIY summing bus

Post by tablebeast » Tue Nov 08, 2005 3:06 pm

I want to build my own summing bus. It needs to have 16 inputs with each switchable from stereo to mono. Anyone have any schematics for something like this? I guess the Roll Music Folcrom would be the closest thing to what I want to build, how exactly does that thing go together? Any ideas on this idea of building your own summing bus, any links to threads on other boards, etc.

my god there are so many posts about this on groupdiy.com your head will explode.

the NYdave schematic looks simple and good - just google that.

analog summing is a no brainer - some quick math for the resistors, and the rest is just parts and a case. And something for makeup gain.

thats precisely the one.

If it were me, I would lose the switches though cause they just add money - and assign the inputs to either left or right.

And make sure the inputs normal when they are not in use.

there is also a summing bus based on the hamptone pre in an old tapeop - somewhere online there is a scan of this. Its essentially the same thing, but with the makeup gain as part of the design based off of the Jfet design Scott used in his preamp.

that i dont remember. if you could find the issue # or the scan that would be interesting to see. i'll have to check around for that.

and i agree with you about not bothering with the switches or the pots for that matter. its a waste of time and money.

Well, that's exactly why the level control, mute and assign switches are labeled OPTIONAL on that schematic. One man's "waste of time and money" is another man's damn-handy feature.

Here's a simpler rendition with just pushbutton on/off switches for left and right.

analog summing is a no brainer
It is, when someone gives you a circuit and resistor values, or tells you the formula to use to figure out what values to plug in. But there was some brainpower involved somewhere along the line, don't ya think?

dave i meant no disrespect.

your design is much appreciated. thank you for making available. i guess i could have worded that better. maybe something like "depending on how your going to be using it, you may not need the volume or mute controls, which would save you time and money".

i'll go crawl in the corner now.

dave, I meant its a no brainer because of your schematic... obviously, without your hard work and time and energy there would be much less DIY in the world. Thanks for putting that thing online in the first place so hacks like us can build something cool :D

No offense taken... I was just having a little fun with busting yer chops. That's why I put the "winky guy" emoticon at the end of the post.

I think we should start calling Dave "Winky" as a nickname, since it belongs in all of his posts. I appreciate the wry sense of humor as much as the DIY-design goodness.

Love ya NYD! :P

i'd be really interested in this if anyone has more info...

seems like it would be relatively easy to make a kit for a summing bus with jfet drivers, with as much hype as analog summing is getting these days i hope seventh circle or hamptone are putting something together a novice like me could build...

sounds like more fun than just buying a folcrom

Are you referring to the JFet mic pre article? There was a simple mix bus diagram showing line input feeding a 10K pot feeding the JFET gain block.

Second page at the bottom.

I'd post a link, but I know the page is on the group diy site, just there's some db corruption keeping the search feature from workin at the moment.

hit the groupdiy.com site, and search for:

hamptone and jfet

Should get you there.

ju
