i'll give this my blessing. i started the discussion and got some potential answers [pertaining to "tips, tricks, and styles"] to my purposefully vague question. i'm satisfied, nobody else is going to be. end of story.

I've had a little bit of luck with a 57 if you place it about halfway into the bass drum at about a 45 off the head. It gets enough of the shell that it keeps it a little warm, and you get the clack from the beater to give it that nice metal feel... but then again you might not be recording metal :P
