I am currently using a Hamptone tube pre for bass DI duties and, except maybe for playing live, my sansamp just gathers dust. If you are trying to decide between a sansamp and a U5, and price is no object, the choice is obvious. Get the U5. The difference between those two is like night and day. 8)

I second (or third) the U-5. Best piece of gear I bought last year. If I was an Avalon rep, I could have a second job. I've "sold" more than a few to bass players who have come in and recorded through it, gone out the next day and bought one for themselves. Totally solved my bass guiar dilema I had been having for years. The best part of it is that it has a 400 watt speaker input that you can use for grabbing a DI off the speaker outs of a bass amp. Sounds fantastic! And the tone banks ain't too shabby either.
