My G4 Dual 1.42- help

Post by jeddypoo » Fri Nov 18, 2005 12:24 pm

So I just got this - a Dual 1.42 ghz G4 with 712 ram and an 180 gig hd (I need to get an external though), and right now I'm having OS issues that make it impossible to run, which is a seperate issue anyway, but can someone tell me something?

WHY WHY WHY is it that Core Audio will not give me the option of 24 bit/48K recording and monitoring? This was never an issue with my ancient 400 Mhz G4, which is what the Dual is supposed to be replacing. I'm fairly damned good with Macs but I can't figure this out. Is it the card? Why would what is essentially the fastest G4 Apple made before the G5 come with a card that couldn't handle 24 bit sound? Help!!!

This could be rudimentary questions but:

1) Are you running the same OS as your former G4?

2) Is the Core Audio drivers updated?

3) Have you tried not using Dual uProc as an option?

4) Does everything work fine at 16bits?

I don't know how much I'd be able to help you (even if you answer the above) but I'm sure it would possibly help others solve your problem... more details help considerably.

1) I was running Tiger on the new one, and I wanted to switch to Panther, which is what I have on the old one (10.3.4 or thereabouts), but my install disk had been damaged and after erasing Tiger (clean install), stopped the Panther installation and left me with no OS. So, no. But part of the reason I wanted to install Panther is that I thought it may have been the OS that was the problem, since it gives me 24-bit sound on my 400 Mhz G4 tower just fine.

2) I didn't see a Core Audio udpate or relevant firmware update on the Apple site.

3) Where do I choose whether to use Dual uproc? I'm running Logic 7, incidentally.

4) Everything seems alright at 16 bits, yes.

Thanks for whatever help you can give me!

I'm stumped. I don't know enough about Logic to help. According to the Core Audio specs on the Apple page it can support 24bit.

I did a little more digging on the Apple site under Support-->Discussions and found an option to try.

http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jsp ... 23&#766823

I'd say search around the message boards for answers. It seems like there are others with the same issue... but more-so with freezing/crashes with the Dual G5's with Logic and Core Audio.

So, if anything else, also try posting on the Apple Discussion board to see if you get any other advice.

Sorry I couldn't help out more.
