I saw this on French television during a recent visit:
http://artists.universal-music.de/_real ... in_tei.ram
Among the many, many things wrong with it:
- The A-ha tribute, even if accidental (I bet it wasn't)
- All the dancing
- The way the one guy wakes his bandmate from a nap by tapping his crotch
- The music

I only see music videos when we stay at a hotel with cable...
And when I think of the potential, and how it's just squandered with utterly useless, unimaginative, porned, boring, trite, sophormoric, moronic, worthless, cheesy crappiness, I wanna cry, cry, cry.
Somehow... you can hear a song over and over and it's fresh each time, but you see a music video again and it's like a punishment.

Rain of a thousand flames -- I have to vouch for that. It's amazing in it's horribleness.
That one is pretty bad, though. Not homo-erotic in the least...oof
Nerp!

Are there really ever any
good videos?
Videos have always been pretty lame. I'm old enough to have been a witness to Mtv's beginnings. It sucked to begin with and it's only gotten progressively worse. Usually, videos will ruin a song for me. I don't want to watch people lip synching and acting out the stupid fantasy of some Hollywood producer/director. I love live videos, though. In fact, I prefer the live versions over studio versions of most music. It's a true test of whether or not an artist is actually talented.
It's so hard to pick the worst video of all time for me, because I think 99.99999% of them are crap. That said, I think the "Evolution" video of Pearl Jam is a great video. Regardless of whether or not you like their music, that video is great in artistic terms. Great animation, and well...for once, at least for me...the video helps to elevate the song.

Good thing this thread isn't about R. Kelly's "Trapped In The Closet" series. Because you can't knock that shit.
There's definitely some good videos out there, although they're hardly common. The Kings of Leon's "The Bucket" is a very clever, pretty video, using a fairly simple technique to great effect (although there's no excuse for the song's egregiously bad lyrics). Dizzee Rascal's "Dream" is a cool one, which reminds me a lot of Michel Gondry. Speaking of which, how about Michel Gondry's videos? The White Stripes' videos are mostly good as well. And what's that (maybe new) Daft Punk video? Very glittery and late 70's-looking. That one is fun.
As for bad videos, there's Jamie Lidell's "The City." Not really the worst video ever, but pretty confusing.

if you have expanded cable and want a good laugh try tuning into the
VH-1 Classic channel...they usually have 1-2 hour themed blocks of stuff from the good old days of dated music video production values
mostly stuff from the 70's 80's and early '90s. remember Haircut One Hundred?
there's a show that comes on a few times during the week that plays all the alternative videos from when alternative was still alternative...the times i've catched the show i've probably seen like every The Jam video ever made and even some MBV ones
saw a weird Killing Joke one tonight too heh.

Question: Is it still standard for the less-well-established major label acts to make videos? I am talking about the types of bands that tour, play to audiences of fewer than 5,000 at a time, and don't readily crack the top 100. An example would be Arcade Fire. I am asking because I can't remember the last new music video I saw (except for some teenybopper juggernauts like Ashlee Simpson; those are the contemporary equivalent of the Partridge Family and for those acts nothing much has changed in thirty years). I remember back in the early 1990s even bands like Phish were obligated to make videos as part of their record deals. Now that MTV barely shows videos anymore, is this a dying "art"? Just curious.
