You've got me stumped!
Who is the manufacturer of the auto-locator/track remote pm the Nov/Dec '05 issue? My guess is 3M based on the paint color.

3M M-79. Henry Hirsch in NYC. The counter is custom built on his Helios buy Dave Amels.

Up here in St. Paul, home of 3M we have AxMan surplus. When I was 20 or so a bunch of those remotes, the transport part, you know FF, RW Play and all without the channel assigns were for sale for $2 or so. I bought quite a few and adapted them to various tape machine remote controls.
I've built a number of Frankenpexs over the years, including one MCI/Sony 1" video deck converted to Tascam MS-16 heads and modified electronics, with a power supply from an old Ampex. We called it, of course, the Tampex.
a Scully 280 converted to 1/2" with homebrew electronics and relapped 80-8 heads, controlled by an XT. To go into record, you'd hit R, channel number, then enter. Worked pretty well, but the monitor for the computer really played havoc with the playback heads. Ain't no shielding on a Scully.
AxMan had an MR-70 for sale too, a long time ago, I was just to young to know....
