tapeop paia mic pre mod

Post by charles bronson » Fri Dec 02, 2005 1:15 pm

a couple/few questions concerning the tapeop paia mod.

but first some background info. from the source:

"pin four of the tube connects to the AC side of the preamp's power
supply, at a spot marked f2, and pin five ties to the circuit ground.
the noise floor will improve once the filament pins are heated with
filtered dc. to achieve this, disconnect pin four from the AC supply,
and connect a 1w 15-ohm reisistor from pin four to the junction of
d2, c3, and r2. this is the negative DC side of the power supply"

and another thing this junction is this inch or so strip that runs diag-
onally from the left lead of the diode(d2), to the left lead of the cap(c3),
where the resistor(r2) is practically attached to the cap.

so am i suppose to just bypass the wire connecting pin four to the ac
side all together by connecting the 15-ohm resistor DIRECTLY from
pin four DIRECTLY to the junction. making sure the resistor leads are
insulated/sleeved of course. OR could i just like keep the wire attached
to pin four connecting it to the resistor, now linking the diode(2) to the
cap(c3).

i realize this is kinda much ado about nothing/little. it's just that i have
some real experience with modding small stuff i.e. octava ribbon mics,
octava mc-o12s, bellari "extensive" mod along with building super
weak, small pre-amp kits. but have yet to do any more extensive
modifications. never have installed a jumper or any such action as
this.

this post long enough ya'll!?

any input appreciated.

its Matt Newports mod - looks like tapeop either moved the link or got rid of it - but google has it cached Here

You'll want pin 4 of the vacuum tube completely disconnected from the AC supply. Connect pin 4 to the DC supply via that 1W 15 ohm resistor. Make super sure you connect the filter capacitor correctly; when they are connected backwards the polarity mismatch causes them to explode rather violently and loudly.

Hope this helps! Let me know if you have any other questions!

y'all are the shit!

so's to get this straight i connect the 15ohm res.from pin four directly to the "junction".

the junction being what? just like the diode or the capacitor?

i guess i need to know this specifically for sure.

thanks

yeah, the resistor goes to the junction. an easy way to connect it is to loop the resistor lead around the lead of the diode, then solder to that. that way you don't have to worry about trying to solder to the pad or trying to double up the leads in one pcb hole.

are you able to get a picture of PCB, just so i can have a look at what you're looking at?

thanks for the input lightning electronics!

i will send out some photos later on tonight.

another thing with this mod that you or some other folks might help
me out with is me deciphering wheather or not these new caps and
reisistors are the right size.

this mAY sound silly. i realise this. i do have experience with working on
circuits. i have ordered and "installed" plenty of caps over the last couple
of years or so. BUT i am a littled alarmed at exactly how large these new
mod caps are. i am pretty sure but not completely sure that they are the
right values. the gentelman from triode electronics makes it seem like
everything is fine with these hulking large ass caps. and the values on the
actual caps do seem to be consistant with the stated values listed on the
invoice. BUT THESE CAPS ARE FRIGGIN' LIKE LITERALLY 8 TO 10 TIMES
LARGER THAN THE PREVIOUS ONES. at this point i really can't be too sure
at all that they will all fit on the circuit board!

so yeah, i will send some pics on the caps. will try to compare the old caps
with the new ones.

i mean like friggins huge. c cell battery huge.

as usual you guys are a great help.

bring it on!
