3 favorite recordings

Post by MichaelAlan » Fri Dec 09, 2005 10:28 pm

It's tough but right now I'm gonna say--

NoFX: Punk in Drublic (cliche I guess, but It IS that good)
Refused: Shape of punk... (Even MORE cliche, but it IS that good)
NoFX: So Long and Thanks for all the Shoes (how the hell did this one get in here?)

All-time favorite, or current favorite? I'm gonna assume all-time:

Rush - Moving Pictures
Mr. Bungle (self-titled)
Metallica - Master of Puppets

Yeah, I'm a prog-metal kid at heart.

This will change tomorrow, or in 5 minutes, but for now:

Beach Boys - Pet Sounds
Logh - The Raging Sun (fantastic Swedish band)
Radiohead - OK Computer

...but I could easily add another 3:

Neil Young - Harvest
Bonnie Prince Billy - Master and Everyone
Sigur Ros - the one with the alien baby on the cover

Big Star #1 Record/Radio City (technically two albums I guess)
Mahler's 8th Sy. with Boston SO and Seiji Ozawa
Papas Fritas first album from c. 1995 (not the EP)

Is Papas Fritas totally forgotten now? Shame. They recorded pop better than any others in the 1990s (IMHO) and as far as I know did all the tracking for that first album themselves.

The Heptones, On Top
The Raincoats, The Raincoats
Otis Redding, The Soul Album

While I'd miss a lot of other music, I think I'd be pretty happy with just those three.

Can - Ege Bamyasi
Dirty Three - Ocean Songs
Captain Beefheart - Trout Mask Replica

these three should just about cover the spectrum of approaches i take to recording.

TOOL - Aenima
Primus - Sailing The Seas of Cheese
Mr. Bungle - (Self Titled) - Good call John
Sonic Youth - Dirty
Ween - God Ween Satan

oops, thats 5

Are we talking sound wise, or just great albums?

assumptions I make when doing this list:
I consider a whole album a recording
It's not just the recording quality, but the songs and performances
In another day, this list will probably look totally different:

Minutemen- Double Nickles on the Dime

Joanna Newsom- Milk Eyed Mender

Black Sabbath- Paranoid
not to worry, just keep tracking....

That's funny dude...I almost put down "Seas of Cheese", but I had to put "Master of Puppets" on there instead. "Aenima" is a great choice, too.

I didn't think about recording quality at all, although the albums I chose aren't particularly bad recording-wise either. I chose stuff I really like -- not whether they were classics or influential (although they might incidentally be either), but just what sounds right on a personal level. Of course, there's a lot more albums that sound right to me, but it's a fun exercise to settle on an undefinitive, but meaningful three.

3 is waaayy to few to even consider...

but what the hell

ENO-Taking Tiger Mountain (By Strategy)
(Double Nickles Would Fill This Gap in a way)

the SunRa Singles (Disc One) it's got Dreaming/Daddy's Gonna Tell You No Lie (if forced, that 7" alone would make the cut)

The Kinks (Village Green Preservation Society)
maybe the White Album...
