I just picked up "The Concert For Bangladesh" DVD and.........God Damn!! How insanely cool is that? Fucking George Harrison!!! I am convinced he is without a doubt the coolest Beatle. He looks soooo amazing in that white suit with the orange-ish dirt and the white Strat. In fact everyone is waaay cool looking.....Clapton with the ES-350?

On the 2nd disc there is footage that plays in the menu of the performers walking from the dressing rooms towards the stage and it's just an endless parade of legendary talent. Kalus Voorman, Leon Russell, Clapton, Harrison, Ringo, Phil Spector, Jesse Ed Davis and on and on..........

And how about Badfinger sitting on chairs all in a row and playing acoustic guitars? Sheeeeee-it!! It doesn't get any better that that!!!

Billy Preston taking us all to church, getting happy "That's the way God planned it" and just blowing clapton away with his flat out powerful gospel. Hare Krishna-Hallelujah!

Cut to Billy singing My Sweet Lord in Concert for George.

Crying or Very sad

RIP George

hey, i got this for christmas too! it really is great. there is such a natural, loose vibe to it. obviously when you're dealing with great songs and very talented musicians, you're not going to need much rehersal. and Shankar's group tears it up in the beginning of the concert too.

Shankar was pretty funny telling the mostly WASP hippies to not smoke or talk during the performance. Then after they applaud following his tuning, "if you like the tuning you should love the performance". Classic.

We got a copy of the original vinyl of Concert for Balgladesh into the record store I work at the other day. A regular customer came in and picked it up and started ranting to us, "This is like the greatest album ever!" On and on, for about 10 minutes, about how great Harrison and Clapton, et al, were. Then he says, "Of course, it's got all that Ravi Shankar bullshit." I coulda punched him.

I did have an Ali Akbar Khan CD with me that I slipped onto the house system and played until he left.

Hey, if you guys think Ravi is cool you should check out some of the stuff his daughter Anoushka Shankar has done. She can play with just as much passion and skill as he did. She tears up the sitar just like Ravi does and plays alot of his original Raga's.

Check out her website with some amazing recordings she has listed and some interesting links: http://www.anoushkashankar.com/

George and Ravi did an amazing album together also (in case you haven't heard it) called "Chants of India", where George Harrison plays with Ravi and other classic Indian musicians. The album is produced by Harrison as well. All ancient Vedic chants and Raga's.

Anoushka does indeed rule. As does the Chants record. And I recently rewatched Monterey Pop, and Ravi's set there is a totally face ripper. It's almost like he'd seen what Hendrix and The Who, etc, could do and was saying, "You think you're musicians? Check this shit out!"

I hadn't seen CFB for many years, and when i had seen it in the past it was on a crappy 27th generation VHS dub. So i picked this up and thought it was astoundingly good. Ringo and Keltner.. there's just a beautiful rhythmic good vibe coming down from their collective backbeat. I LOVE that Ringo has one song to sing (and it would have been his recent hit i think, though i may be wrong) and he's reading the words off his lap or something, and still screws them up. Shruggs it off with a Ringoesque grin and nod.

Among many great moments though, the best is Billy Preston absolutely KILLING 'That's The Way God Planned It'. The whole song is great, but when he's moved to dance across the stage, it takes it all to another level. Amazing, amazing stuff. Soulful. Spiritual, joyous and spontaneously beautiful.

It gave me a similar feeling to when i saw him singing My Sweet Lord on the Concert For George. In his hands MSL becomes a wonderful gospel hymn... a hymn to GH, sitting at the 'Lord's side' no doubt.

Maybe i need to find me some good Billy Preston solo stuff. Any suggestions?

HH
