Just wondering which you prefer the Digi 002 OR Digi 002rack?
I am trying to decide if the interface is worth it over just the rack.
Which of the 2 do you use and why?

Thanks

I use the rack. Don't have much need for an external digital mixer. I have an analog mixer I can route things through externally if I want. I think that's a better option if you want to mix on an external control surface.

I use the 002-R. I wish I had the control surface, but I really don't have the space, and mixing with the mouse isn't the end of the world for me. I would prefer to mix with faders though. I guess the lack of space for me is the difference.

I do have to say I am very happy since I recently switched to PT-LE. I had been very frustrated with other sofware I had used. I find PT to be great.

I have an 002R and a Command/8. I like have the i/o in the rack and not on my desk. The combo works well. Very Happy

I find that mixing with only 8 faders and 8 knobs and a bunch of buttons and menu keys is just as frustrating, if not more so, than mixing with a mouse.

The next generation PTLE box should be coming out any time now, too.
I have a Digi001 and mouse it. A control surface is probably better and I was red hot to get one for a while, but ended up not getting one and not really missing it.

I got the rack unit as I felt it had a more professional appearance and I definitely did not want to route all those cables to my desk.

I have the 002R and really like it (except for the power harness failure during a gig - Digi overnighted the kit - cheers!). I plan to get the Command 8 for a couple of reasons, #1 being my obsession with x.5s and x.0s where volume fader settings are concerned - 5s and 10s with pans. I can't seem to just close my eyes and find where I want to hear things when mixing in the box - that's much easier with real knobs and faders.

macr0w, how well does the Command 8 interface with your computer - any latency issues (control response, not audio)?

I have the 002 control surface. I also teach audio students using them. I think it improves mixes a thousand times over when people can get their hands on the dials and faders instead of using a mouse. You stop mixing with your eyes and brain and start using your ears. You still have to use a mouse every know and then, but only to open up plug-ins, tracks, and bounce down files. There are plenty of control features that a lot of people don't even know exist on it.
Save the extra grand for it, quality engineering pays you back at the end of the day.

A friend of mine had the 002 control surface and returned it for the rack version because he never used the faders. But he was used to mixing with the mouse. I'm used to mixing with faders, so I have the control surface (I also use a Control|24 at work). I was looking at a Command 8 today and it looks more robust and better laid out than the 002 surface, so maybe a 002 rack and Command 8 is the package to go with. If I were buying today that's likely what I'd do.

I hear that!!...Thats one of the biggest thing I miss since I`ve switched to my 002r set up!

Kind of tuff to find those pan knobs with a mouse with your eyes closed. You have to do it (automation) then close your eyes and listen....but no big deal.

My next investment will be the command8 for that hands on control that I`m used to.

I just bought the control surface (tho it's not hooked up yet, but the rationale below is why I spent the money).

For me, psychelogically, I *much* prefer setting the "pan" control with a knob than turns rather than a side-to-side fader like you have to do with the mouse.

Also, myself and some additional engineers up here, just feel more comfortable having "real faders" to move around at certain parts in the mixdown process.

Also also, it's easier to reach the back of the control surface to plug in a mic really quickly, rather than to deal with the rack gear. I prefer to leave my rack gear in 1 place as much as possible.

2 cents.

I'm so sorry to do this... (help a newb out).

1- So there is a rack "and" a rack/desk option for the 002?

2- If so, I presume it would be better for "me" to get the rack only and use my old desk, right? Or is the 002 desk not really the same thing as my Soundtracs desk?

3- Is the command8 just the newer version of the 002 desk? Why are you all saying that the old rack and new comand8 are a good pair over the 002 rack/desk?

Be eazy on me as I'm shocked that I would ever post in the "computer world" section (as he opens mind, expands horizons).

There is an 002 rack-only unti. it's 2U in size.

there is a desktop-only until, the "control surface" or "table top" or whatever other people call it, i can't remember the model variation number off the top of my head. functionally it does the same thing as the rack unit plus it has 8 physical faders and some other knobs, so it works more like a "real" mixing console.

the Command 8, i think, is something else entirely. i'm not sure what exactly that replaces.
