i would like to try recording in a big church or similar space for my batch of material. has anyone had success making arrangements with a local church/school/etc to use their space to record? i suck at making connections...

Um... ask?
You can try bartering- offer to record their music group(s), and in return, you can record your stuff.
Also, you can always JOIN a church, if it doesn't interfere with your rock & roll lifestyle

This is a gueess here, but I believe it will be easier to convince a church. There will be more 'security issues" with a school and if its a public school they might not be allowed to rent space. I could be wrong.
Find a cool space and just ask.
