A general suggestion for MP3 posting.

Post by evan » Mon Dec 19, 2005 4:12 pm

It seems like a lot of people like to use MySpace for MP3s, and, personally, this doesn't give me much motivation to listen to it. The artifacting on their encoding is horrendous, and I find it barely listenable in any degree.

Rather than telling you go buy bandwidth (although this would be not-unreasonable suggestion, since it's so, so cheap), I'd like to let everyone know about YouSendIt, a free file-hosting service. You don't even need to register! Use that instead of MySpace, and I bet more people will listen to your stuff, and be able to respond effectively.

As for hosting services, you might try A Small Orange, who offer a neat little $30/year package that gives you 75MB of space with 3G transfer. I haven't used them myself, but it seems like a good choice for small-time MP3 posts.

MySpace is fine as long as you give the option to download the original MP3 instead of using their crappy streaming app. Look for the "Download" link underneath the song title.

I'll vouch for the YouSendIt deal and go a bit further. Basically, you upload a zipped folder--but that zipped folder can contain just one song. Technically, you're emailing someone the location of this uploaded zip content but for the purposes of something like this board, after sending this uploaded file to someone (could be yourself), it'll leave you with a link where the zipped folder resides and can be posted here.

Works great.

also, myspace is only usable with flash and (I assume) a decent connection - anyone can have an mp3.

I was also on the hunt for a hosting site, cheap, lotsa bandwidth, etc.

Finally, it occured to me that I could just use my Yahoo Briefcase account. I purchased an additional 100Mb of storage for I dunno....maybe $30.00? Mp3's can be downloaded or streamed, depending upon your player.

Maybe I'm missing something, but it seems to work.

At Goddady.com you can pay $10 per month or so for a lotta gigabytes of storage and tranfer.

Also, why not Soundclick, they offer an easy and useable solution to this problem.

Flash bad. Sign-ups bad.

Just give me a downloadable file link, and I'm golden.

I understand but soundclick does do the downloadable link thing also.

It just seems so much easier :D

Also, check if your ISP gives you web space.

I use earthlink, and they give you 10 megs of space for 8 different accounts, but they don't really publicize it at all. I didn't even think about it for like a year, and then realized, hey I could use that space for MP3s (or pics, or whatever).

i freely admit that i'm a myspace ho.

but i'm morally opposed to uploading music there.
i'm also morally opposed to coffee with sugar in it, wars, and frostbite.

I use Liquidweb for like $10 a month and get a freaking ton of storage and transfer. Never goes down either. Check em out.
