bass end

Post by vuego » Tue Dec 20, 2005 4:28 am

could someone give me advice on the bass end?
I want it meaty but not rumbly if that makes sense, ive only got multimedia
speakers which have a really limited range 50hz-18khz.
ive checked the mixes in the car, at home on a getto blaster but dont know anyone with good speakers to get a true impression.

Car speakers might give you your most true impression, if only because they are the speakers you may listen to music on the most (this is my case, so my car speakers always get final say on my mixes).
Sometimes headphones can have a very hyped low end, so try your stuff on some headphones if possible and see if it sounds too much / too thin.

I'll get my self a decent pair of headphones and have a listen.
so are you saying if there is a little too much bass on headphones then its probably not a milliona miles away through speakers?

I'd say that you should listen to some albums that are in the ballpark of the sound you're going for, and then compare your mixes. Also, don't be afraid to be roll off some real low end on the bass and/or kick, where it's more of a rumble than an audible tone.

Check this out, good article. Remember Fundamentals are louder than harmonics if you shelf off some of the fundamentals it will allow you to add some to the harmonic freqs. You can feature the beater attack on the kick for the small speaker systems and the low end for the bigger systems. Same goes for clarity of the bass guitar.
