Is there an "ignore posts by __________" function?

Post by Knights Who Say Neve » Wed Dec 21, 2005 1:22 pm

Gearslutz has this very valuable function. Not that they are nearly as many dipshi...er, annoying people on this board as there are on Gearslutz, but still, there's at least one person here whos comments are always negative in a useless, egomaniacal way. And since I don't want to bother the moderators, I'd rather just not see this person's posts. Besides, it doesn't seem fair to lock a thread because of one guy running his mouth.

Gearslutz uses vBulletin, which has the "ignore" feature. TOMB uses phpBB, which does not. There may be a hack out there to add the feature, but it's not there by default.

Maybe we should all just team up and vote one person "off the island". Moderators, care to indulge us? I have a feeling the vote would be unanimous.

I vote that Tatertot goes into the fryer first!

Honestly, that just doesn't seem like a very polite thing to do, and beyond that, it's kinda useless since the board is free and a person could just sign up with a new account.

And it does seem easy enough to read someone's name and just ignore that post, um, manually?

Avast! Vote me out and you will have to deal with an even worse scourge:

SON OF TATERTOT

Unless there is actually some kind of ip blocking. I am not computer-aware enough to even contemplate the particulars of such a measure.

It's just that when a guy comes into a thread to pick stupid fights- you know, like this:

"What egregious, execrable, hoky poky fucking horse manure for a bunch of clueless, tired old white people that live in the middle of nowhere."

-it tends to drag down the whole thread. When these people get ignored, OTOH, they eventually go away and stop dragging down the discussions. I'm OK with just ignoring them "manually" as Prof suggests, but I guess not everyone has Professor's refined sense of self-control.

Voting people off would not work at all, because this is the internet. Public censure would probably just encourage the trolls to flame on. Perhaps a moderator could ask a person privately to cool it? I dunno, just bringing it up.

Except that the moderators are already these power-mad, Stalinist, thought-control junkies? OOOPS, of course I meant to say that already the moderators are burdened with alot to do?

I want this function, if at all possible... Manually ignoring a post is a quaint notion, but it means that you'll have probably read most if not all of said post, before realizing that it's a steaming pile of vile bile... The person that I wish to ignore seems to delight in instigating head-butting for the sake of head-butting, using hateful, vitriolic spew in the process, and after I've read his posts, I feel like I've eaten dog shit for lunch. I'd really rather never read another word from his dark, grievous soul, again...

Wow, a resurrected post from what feels like ages ago.

Ah well, a new response from me anyway...
I recall the commandant at my high school once telling me that you learn as much, and indeed sometimes more, from people you dislike or with whom you disagree, because you learn about the kind of person you don't want to be.
Obviously that's easier said than done, but it's still something to consider.
