I know Tape Op did a great interview with Ethan, but I didn't get an idea of how they recorded the kick. The kick sound on these records is fantastic.
Hell, the drum sounds on all Adams--Johns' recordings are fantastic.
I know the room has a lot to do with it, but man, what a great sound.
Kick on Ryan Adams--Ethan Johns recordings?

I love that stuff too. the kick never really stuck out in my ears though...i'll have to listen back to that. im sure Ethan is using some type of minimal mic type technique to get his sounds. he tends to be old school i think.

I think part of the sound of the kick has to do with Ethan playing the drums on most of those songs. As he says in the article, there was a lot of bleed due to the fact that it was literally both Ryan and Ethan sitting in the studio knocking out a tune a day.
Also, as a producer/engineer, he probably has a better understanding of performing in the studio as opposed to playing live in a club.
