monitors: vertical or horizontal ?

Post by supafuzz » Tue Jan 03, 2006 6:10 am

do you stand em up or lay em on their sides

tweeter on top or bottom?
tweeter inside or outside?

any real differences?

talking nearfields
right above the mixing desk on the same metro rack
47" off the floor angled down on a pair of auralex mo-pads
front ported w/8" woofer

thanks

Harley,

All speakers are different, so you should ask the manufacturer for their advice.

Hey Ethan!

my tech built em and said

I prefer NS-10s (and like speakers) sitting up on end, tweeter at top of course. I swear it sounds wrong to me if they aren't this way. I like ADAM S3-A's on their side, makes sense if you look at them as the tweeter is in the center.

I like NS10Ms on their side, tweeters out and up. They also work vertically with the tweets on the outside, too, but I like horizontal for the lower profile (and I think they sound better to me this way!)
My MS802s are vertical. Definitely vertical.

well the speakers are going back to my tech for tweeking
the tweeters being driven too hot and the crossover frequency needs to be moved a little...
i'll have them back over the weekend and will try with the tweets upright

When I got my Tannoy monitors, the manual was very adamant about NOT putting them or any monitors on their side, but I don't remember why. I of course did, but decided I liked them better standing up.
FWIW, you might find that same info on the Tannoy website.

That is a good link!
However, I sill like my NS10s on their side. They're a decent distance from me, so perhaps that's why it works okay. Not to mention I sometimes stand at my console, so that makes some sense...

I prefer monitors verticle. When the tweeters are on the outside I feel like the sound changes too much when I move from one end of the console to the other. I love the concentric concept. I'll have to get some expensive Tannoys someday!

My guess is that it's all about your room. Try all the angles.

Currently, I have my NS-10s standing up with tweeters on the outside. When the tweeters were on the inside, I didn't hear as much stereo separation, so my mixes were getting kinda out there on other systems. When they were on their sides, I kept getting a stiff neck. I guess I was trying too hard to keep my head in one spot.

When my control room was set up 90 degrees from where it is now, the monitors sounded best on their sides with tweeters in. Go figure.
not to worry, just keep tracking....

it's funny though
even with the tweeters needing ajustment
my mixes with the new monitors translate amazingly well

much better than before

still dealing with wanting to overdo bass..but That'll start to get dealt with with some room treatment I'm guessing.

Genelec says that 1031As should not be put on thier side because of the reflections from the surface of the console. The range (1-2k) that it effects could have some serious effects on the "attack" of your mix.

Then the NS10s, i've heard people say that they were meant to be placed on their side, hence the way the type is on the front of the speaker, but I haven't seen documentation that states this - not that it doesn't exist.

Maybe try taking some sort of sonic measurements to see if you experience any type of degredation due to placement?
