Cool EQ's

Post by joel hamilton » Fri Jan 06, 2006 8:04 am

What kind of EQ are you guys rocking these days?

outside of my custom console EQ's...
I have been really loving:

Pultec EQP1R's pair I have made for "creative developments."
Manley Massive passive.
Filtek BFE MKIII's pair.

and now:

A pair of melcors, and a pair of Neumann PEV's, racked by Bradb:

I love the Daking EQ on electric guitars, but other than that I just use board EQ to cut when necessary.

But I'm wondering what this is like:

It looks like a multiband IBP/EQ

Just some ANT W696b's. How do you like the Filtek Mk III's? I want a pair. Are they clean or do they have a "sound"?
I know enough to know that I don't know what I am doing.

The filteks will go from "clean" to having "a sound" which is why i find them so useful. I am really "spoiled" in the EQ department, so when i go outboard it has to be something special. The filteks are special. I have them powered by a beautiful telefunken power supply that gives them WAY more than needed, for headroom. They will get gritty in a pleasant way when hit really hard, or just be fairly neutral when cutting in bell mode... The fact that you can switch each band in and out of the path is great as well, so you go through as little circuit as possible when just using the HPF or the LPF....

The melcor's dont seem to NEED xformers, I may wind up trying it out though. my console has nice xformers at the line in/ 24 track out pre fader patch point, so I can get away with that sort of thing though...It is 600 ohm, so I seem to have an easier time interfacing with all this old stuff.

Cool. I think I know where a pair of the Filteks are for sale. I have an empty lunh box that I was going to load with 4 EQ's and 2 of the new A Designs pres when available. Can't decide on API 550b's or wait for the Daking EQ's if they ever come out with them in 500 form factor as rumored.

Joel, thanks for the reply. Can you give me any more input on the GME-20 sound? I am in the process of getting my first pair racked, and have a client with a pair for sale. I am wondering if they are "good enough" to warrent having 4. At aprox $500 a pair you are getting into API territory money wise, but for just one instead of the pair.

Sorry for the double-post. My computer wigged out for a minute. I still wish I had a whole bunch of Sontecs.

Chris,
Would that take TWO consoles, or TWO wishes? ;)
