Shure drum mics

Post by Radioaction » Sun Jan 22, 2006 5:47 pm

Hey guys. I was thinking about getting a some decent drum mics for recording. Does anybody know anything about the Shure 4 piece drum mic set? It includes a PG 52 kick mic, and 3 PG 56 snare/tom mics. Any thoughts/comments?

I haven't used the kit with the PGM mics, but I've got three of the kits with the Beta-52 & 3x SM-57s. I've never been too partial to the SM-57s, indeed I think they are pretty crappy, but I have to think that something sold as a 'crappier than the SM-57' cheap alternative would be something I really wouldn't like.
I do use the kits, and I use the 57s on various instruments aside from just drums. I happen to like the Beta-52 perhaps more than some folks you'll hear from, though I like it for it's particular character when that is the character I want.

I know you were asking about the PGM series. I think that if the price difference has the PGM at 50%, 40%, maybe even 30% of the cost of the SM & Beta package and that's what works for your budget then it's a good choice. If the difference is less than 30%, and especially if it's less than 20% then I'd say you should save your pennies for the SM/Beta kit-pack. Especially since the 3x SM-57s are not so application-specific to drums as the PG-56 mics, meaning you'll find other uses for the 57s.

And hey, don't forget the overheads.

The cheap Shure mics just haven't worked for me I have a couple of Beta 52's & a bunch of sm 57's I love. I hear the Beta 58 is a great rack tom mic. Will have to try that sometine. I think it is worth the extra money to go with the SM or Beta series mics.

Well unlike other people I am pretty happy with the sound of the 57. I have about 6 of them and at least 1 of them can be heard on all of my recordings. Now, granted this is in part due to $$$ issues, but I have gotten some great snare, tom, and some very nice bass drum tones with the 57's. I'm sure there are better mics out there, and you shouldent take any one persons advice on which is the 'best' because we all have different wants when it comes to tone. Check out a few AKG mics as well, they also make some good drum mics too.

I use the Shure Beta 98's on snare and toms - they are awesome.

I would get a EV ND868 for kick and you can get Audio Technica ATM25's for cheap on the toms... IF you want to use dynamics on the toms.. I'm sold on oktavas for toms!

if you want to go cheap, try the Audix Fusion series (F10's, F12's, F15's). they actually sound pretty good believe it or not. You can probably score a set for $100-150 (depending if you get the F15 overheads) if you watch eBay. That said, I eventually went to the Audix D2, D4, D6 route (more $$). Oh, and I almost forgot-- the F10 sucks on snare, so get something better (Audix I5 or SM57 will do).
