Interfacing API 8200a

Post by demonfuzz » Wed Jan 25, 2006 12:05 am

Was curious to see who has an 8200 or 8200a & how you interface yours.

I have an 8200A & getting ready to wire it up.
Anyone using DirectOut, Insert Send plus the Aux Port?

I'm trying to have it go to ProTools & a Tape machine.
So I suppose Direct out + Insert Send (S1)

Just a little curious how to use that Aux port.

I just got one of these myself. I'll send you my patchbay design so you can check it out.
let me see......

lets see this is the patch bay.

8x tape outs to 8x 8200 inputs half normalled
8x 8200 insert sends to 8x 8200 insert returns
8x 8200 direct outs to tape inputs half normalled
8x digi 002 outs and 8x digi 002

i dont know the sytem too well yet since i just got it. from what i can tell the sends on each channel (two per channel) go to the 8200's aux outputs.

i dont quite know how the 8200 insert returns and sends work. there's one for each channel......

let me just send you the patchbay layout.
whats your email?

I am trying to get mine interfaced up...
I'll reply up on the board too.

My thing is I got Tape & ProTools.
"I figured with 2 Sends (S1, S2) + Direct outs, I can have signal sent to Tape, ProTools & my Outboard gear Patchbay. "

i think you can do that. I've got to spend more time with it and experiment.....

"On the Direct Input I will 1/2 normal to Pro Tools, with option to patch in Tape or external synths, pre-amps, etc...
On the Insert Return, I wanted to have it go to patchbay as well, with this being mainly for outboard gear, but according to the manual, the insert return can be your tape return? "

Right right.

"I am rather confused on ideal way to set it up & wanted to make sure I order the right DB25 cables. ""

I was confused as well. I've never done this before so i just told a pro to come up with the plan. i told him what i wanted, and how i was using the equipment. I'd be interested in hearing from someone with more experience about patchbay layout n' stuff. maybe if you call/email api directly they can come up with some suggestions. they're really good about service.

"The AUX has me confused as it seems to be a different cable pinout.
But not sure if it takes same standard D-SUB/Tascam style cable."

that's something you can ask api as well.

here's a question,

on the power supply there's two power switches. one for the mains, and another for 24 volts. what's that for?

Looking at the manual, the 24v appears to be a 24v logic for switching other gear?
(it's available via the AUX cable)

I have my 8200 power supply mains on only, not the 24 v switch.
Seems to be working fine.

Hello Ivanbambam

The aux output on the 8200/8200A are the standard Tascam D-sub pinout. It is all standardized across the line. The pinouts for all the back panel connectors are in the operating manual.

As for the 24volt switch on the L100 Power Supply, the 7800 requires this for the logic control. The 8200 A does not use this voltage, so it is fine to leave it turned off.

If I can be of any further help, please email me at the factory mark@apiaudio.com and I will be more than happy to answer all of your questions.
