Audio-Technica PRO 37 Small Diaphragm Cardioid Condenser Mic

Post by Shields » Thu Jan 26, 2006 2:50 pm

I'm looking into buying an SDC, and $100 seems a reasonable price. Anyone know of any reason I should stray from this mic?

I have a pair of pro37r that I use all the time.
I like them on acoustic guitar and drum overheads. assuming I'm not using LDCs for those applications.

These are pretty kick ass mics for the price.

Our beloved moderator drumsound uses these a lot - cool drum overhead mics.

I bought a piar of these about 6 months ago and used htem on percussion, banjo, harp, a crappy acoustic that they really help as well. I think I'm going to try it on bottm snare next.

I have a pair and I also use them a lot. Good tom mic if you want a crisp sound. And what the heck, Albini likes 'em.

I've had a pair since they came out, love them on my 1959 00-18 and upright grand piano, work well on vocals, as well, though I generally use a LDC. I've also bought some AT 3031's for the church we go to, very nice inexpensive mics, as well.

They are great on a lot of different sources. A real "Swiss Army" mic.

Albini likes it, Weston loves it.

For the price of a 57, why not?

Has anybody been able to compare these to other AT mics like the 4051, 4041, or 4031?

I've had em side by side with the AT3031s, live. The 31's had just a bit more output and seemed just a bit brighter. They were being used for vocals. Using a 16 channel Yamaha mixer and a pair of 8 inch powered event TRN-8 studio monitors in a high ceiling church room, approx 125x50 feet. I thought the pro 37r's were smoother and more balanced/realistic sounding, though I would be happy to own some of the AT3031's.

Good mics for acoustic stuff - clean, natural sound.

yea, thats what i heard from mine. not really very natural to my ears, but not bad sounding. "juiced" would be my term.

I borrowed one of these from a friend and I really like it. I think it does well under the snare but where it surprised me was as a room mic. I popped it in a corner opposite the drums for one track and after smashing it with a compressor I loved the sound so much I ended up only using that for the drums on that track.

I am thinking about picking up a pair to use for overheads and acoustic guitar etc. after using this one.

I think they are decent for the price, but like mentioned before, a little harsh/brittle sounding. I prefer the Oktava MK-012 which also has pad and multicapsule options.
