CHEAP-O Solid state recording amp recommendations?

Post by Justine_X » Fri Jan 27, 2006 4:24 pm

Yeah, crucify me, I have a weird thing for small-to-medium-size solid state amps... zero-depth presence & silicon transistors, YUM YUM!! (Hope I'm not stepping on the toes of another related post here...!!)

My Fender combos never seem to like the series of distortion pedals I run my signal through, and I'm finally swapping out the Pignose from my amp chain in favor of something bigger.

I've got a few options gleaned from other posts on the subject... Park, Vox Pathfinder, Randall??... some Yamaha... any other suggestions? I'm talking $0-$100 (top ramen) range. Bonus points for "obscure early 80's metal demo"-style amps... but no Peavey!!

No shit!! That's the exact amp I blew up, putting me in this predicament. I was so in love with it... including the smell. My roofer had found it in an alley and gifted it to me.

Let me know if like the reverb -- maxed out it made playing each note feel like slingshotting a ball bearing into an empty brewery vat.

Ummm... can I retract the 80's metal thing? I'm kind of leery about Crate, and I don't want to know what lies beyond.....

About that Crate link. Sorry. That was cruel. I admit that I was spurred along by your 80s metal quip.

*Phew* Thank god. I was seeing puffy poodle hairdos and starting to feel gravely misunderstood...

Easy.

Vox Pathfinder. Cheap, easy to find, sounds decent.

Do not discount Peavy! I thought most of them were crap too, but my friend had a little solid state combo that KILLED...wish I could remember the model number. Good cutting metal tone on it's own, and tremendous synergy with a big muff.

I have not heard any of the following in person, but you might also look into the Vox Escort, the Park (Marshall made) G10R, Marshall MD15DFX, Vox Brian May Special, and Roland Cube 15...

I had a little beige dean markley practice amp that kicked ass.

Totally cool. About the size of a tweed champ. Everything I did with it seemed to wind up sounding like The Cars....
