I heard that these have similar guts to the 160VUs. I don't know how that could be, seeing the price difference - wouldn't everybody have caught on by now?

Man, the bass guitar sounds better already. Just had to be excited, see what discussion about these things (and the 117, 119) I could stir up.

I have a 117 which was originally released as an expander for vinyl playback on hi-fi's. Also compresses quite nicely but in a subtle way - nice on vox and bass.
I got the original manual with mine and it outlines a mod you can do to increased the ratio out to infinity. Anyone ever done this mod?

Pricing on the vintage dbx line is strange. The 161 is like the poor man's 160, and is usually half the cost. The 118 is like a poor man's 161, and is like a third the price of a 161. I had both a 118 and 161. They sounded similar, not identical. I could never really grasp the attack and release features on the 118. It is still a cool little box that I'd rather have than a lot of $100 compressors.

If the 118 has the same circuitry as the 162 (which both are stereo comps), you would be set.
