Last Waltz Microphones?? What are they using?

Post by michaelmichaelson&son » Sun Jan 29, 2006 4:39 pm

In the Band's Last Waltz performance (among many other 70's performances) the band is using these small ball ended microphones on a flexable coil which attaches to the end of the mic stand.

What kind of mics are these? And what is their sole purpose? recording/live?

Any insight would be great!
thanks,
michael

It's been a while since I've seen the dvd, but I think they were using beyer M88's for the vocals. Your description sounds a lot like a Sennheiser MD418 (or is it MD518?) Anyway, I'm pretty sure I remember seeing M88's for the vocals.

He's talking, I think, about the soundstage recording with the Staple Singers (not the Winterland live part).

Damn, I can't remember either. Think they used those little suckers in LET IT BE too.

Oh, and purpose for the M88's? Live yes for sure....but also in the studio. Kick drums, bass amps, some vocalists. Hope this helps.

Hmm I think the one's in "let it be" were AKG C28's with the VR extension tubes. Oh well, someone else chime in here.
