How much money for local TV show music?

Post by thereminman » Mon Jan 30, 2006 11:55 am

Hello, been a long while since I've been on the board...

My question is:
How much money would be reasonable to ask for providing music
(composing and recording) for a local TV show?

They are short little cues, and may include the theme song.

This is a medium size city market (pop around here? 500,000
plus the outlying areas)---it's the local PBS affiliate.

Anyone with any experience?

(the filmmaker's heard my qucik demos and likes them, I'm waiting
for the ok to record them 'for real')

call up other people that do similar work in your area and get their rates and make yours slightly more since you know he/she likes your stuff

what kind of show is it? is it a network thing, or a public access, or etc? depending on the specifics, you could ask for 2 - 25K. you can also (if you trust the producer) ask them what their music budget is for it, and see if that works for you.

Have a rough number in mind when you ask what his budget is. Include studio time, musicians, supplies and a nominal fee for your time. That way you minimize the risk of feeling burned down the road and make a clear decision.

Thank you for your responses.

beard--thanks for your positive suggestion!

rafter--it's pbs, but the local affiliate...they hope it will eventually go
national---but let's see if it even gets to episode ONE first! (laughs)

scott---I'm doing the whole banana--composing, playing the instruments, and recording--all in my home studio

Thanks again, and in advance to any more suggestions.

(Assuming both parties want to participate in a given transaction)

THE FIRST PERSON TO MENTION A NUMBER LOSES

This is as close to a universal rule as I've found in business, but you have to put a lot of faith in it for it to work
