Five very important people though. I dont know about you but I m the president of Sony. I was under the impression that this was a forum for multi-billion dollar media conglomerate chiefs.

I visited the web site and it looks like Vic Chesnut is going to be in Madison in a couple weeks. Think I'll go.

FYI, here is the body...
In the meantime, I wanted to let you know that as you gear up for your 2006 projects, Undertow's Producer roster is ready and willing to rock for you. Our producers have significant major and indie label experience, can assist in songwriting and arranging, can fit a range of budgets, and either have their own studios or a studio "homebase:"
[*]/*David Z*/
[*]/*Jay Bennett*/
[*]/*Doug Easley*/
[*]/*Tim Mooney*/
[*]/*Matt Pence*/
[*]/*Jeff Powell*/
[*]/*Seth Rothschild*/
Wondering how best to handle your next project? Simply give me a call to talk about the details, and we can review which Undertow Producer would be most appropriate for your artist.
Thanks for your time, and have a great weekend.
I don't think they'll have much luck, most folks here seem more into DIY recording/production.

Hey, NOW I'm offended. I DIDN'T get one of those emails!

I stand corrected. Obviously, it IS that Undertow. Kind of weird. But at least they can back up what they're advertising. Those guys are really good. I know happy customers who've recorded with half of the guys on that list. I find the Undertow concept (and roster) pretty interesting actually.

If selling the mailing list (like we were told would happen) means this board can stay up and I can continue to get TapeOp for free, then hey, the TapeOp folks can sell my email address or mailing address to every legit operator - and every industry pimp, for that matter - they want. I'd rather get music spam than Viagra spam, I guess.

Picking up on the "Hey, Vic Chesnutt's coming to Madison" note, the Undertow Orchestra guys (Vic Chesnutt, Mark Eitzel, Dave Bazan, Will Johnson) are in Athens this week rehearsing. Will said he was coming to our show at the 40Watt tonight. I'll pass on the "objective" scoop to him.

Nope, it was from tapeop.

IIRC the message wasn't that the mailing list would be sold, which is kind counterproductive to everyone involved, but that we would receive sponser messages - very different indeed.

From the email address that I received this at, I think that someone harvested the list from Hilary's orginal, send mistake. Why? Because I changed it since then. So, this is spam that isn't doing anything for you.

I think that it would depend heavily on the nature of that legitimate business. I'd imagine that if you started a factory that manufactured magnetic tape, that buying the tapeop mailing list would be of quite large value.

hey, someone, start a tape manufacturing company so we can be of value! (and for other reasons...)

I got a letter from Jefferson Macklin at Undertow. He's a super nice guy, and represents some of my friends and folks we've interviewed. He's not a spammer, Tape Op did not sell him an email list (they collected it as detailed below) and the fact that many of you got this seems to be a cooincidence.

I'm sorry anyone was pissed off by this but pretty ashamed that any of our message board folks would respond in such a antagonistic manner over one email. He wasn't trying to make anyone hire his gang or sell you viagra. If incidents like this happen in the future PLEASE EMAIL ME OR HILLARY FIRST BEFORE MAKING ASSUMPTIONS ABOUT WHERE THE "SPAM" CAME FROM OR ATTACKING THE PERSON WHO SENT IT. http://tapeop.com/email/crane.html

What if it WAS a legit emailing that Tape Op had authorized and we had a bunch of people atack them? Great, thanks.

Compared to the amount of Pro Audio SPAM I get daily, this should be nothing!

"hey larry -

jeff here at undertow, where i'm writing you to apologize for screwing up on friday. with the desire to raise further awareness of undertow and our producers, i had an intern over the holiday break go through appropriate directories (printed, not even on-line, for things like SxSW 04/05, the musician's atlas, rpm direct producer/engineer directory), as well as my past issues of tapeop, for people who might actually care about what we do. this effort was to grow the email database i keep for our producers, and also included record label staffs and band managers. i then sent a very brief "kick off the year - see you at sxsw" email.

well, with a lot of folks in the tapeop world now on the list, i lit a fire with a few:

http://messageboard.tapeop.com/viewtopic.php?t=31375

so, after receiving many unpleasant email responses and attached viruses from about 5 folks, i wanted you to know in no way did i tap into anything message board-related as some folks are insinuating (i'm not even sure how that's done), and truly felt that what i was doing wasn't truly spam as i thought others in the recording field might be interested in undertow. in fact, many people on the list did respond positively. and i tried to structure the email so that it was short and easy to unsubscribe for those who didn't want to hear from me again.

so my sincerest apologies for all this. in no way would i ever want undertow or our producer roster to be perceived negatively. i'm happy to post a message to the board and apologize with the above explanation, but i certainly don't want to fan the fire more!! would love to hear your thoughts on the matter, and again, i'm very sorry for instigating all this!
jeff"

Sorry I was a smartass - I didn't email any junk to them though - it really was pretty easy to unsub which I did immediately - oh, and I'm not really Eric Clapton.

Yeah I guess I'm sorry if I said anything too pointed. I will probably actually go to their show when it comes through Madison.

Oh yeah, and I'm not really the president of Sony either, but I am worried about having my throat cut by dick clark.

Oh joy. Unfortunately, this is made from whole cloth.. Why?

I have more than one account on this messageboard. Some of those accounts haven't been used for more than a couple messages. They all got hit, which means that the only place they would have got this is this board, or by ripping the emails from Hillary's message.

Good stuff.

I must say, I had expected this little rant to remain single post thread and quickly get lost in the archives; we are all learning the power of technology.

So, an overzealous intern makes a fool of you. All good and well. But now you are playing snake in the grass for him, if he exists. And, as well as making decent people, like Hillary and Larry, look bad when they stick up for you, you are giving the impression that you are always playing with a crooked deck.

Was there an intern? Was there no intern? Inquiring minds need to know.

I'll reiterate my earliest assertions, in light of your latest indiscretion: your parents, tired of you using both spaces in the garage for your 'music business', tried to help get you out of the house by harvesting emails for you. It's a more plausible explanation than an 'intern' - interns tend to know stuff about the internet, which seems to have caused some kind of deer-in-the-head lights reaction from yourself: I would assume your relatives share the trait.
