Soundelux U95

Post by pulse_divider » Sat Feb 04, 2006 7:46 am

There was a thread a couple of months back about this mic. I have one that I bought off ebay that was a stinker--- muddy, distorted, worthless.
On Joel's glowing recommendation of his tuned-up U95, I sent it to James Gangwer for some tuneup love. His prognosis was that there was nothing specifically wrong/broken with it but this it just generally sounded like shit. He recommended a capsule and grill replacement, which I got.
Just got it back this week and, HOLY CRAP! This mic sounds amazing! I used it on male vocals last night for a couple of songs and both of them gave me that "ready to mix" sound that I've never really been able to get from any of my other mics. I've heard the term "airy" a lot but have always thought it was just a marketing term but it's the first thing I thought of when hearing the results of this mic.
So, just wanted to say that this mic kicks ass and that James Gangwer did a great job. The U95 is an amazing sounding mic.

I am glad you made the effort. I really feel like the U95 is the best mic that soundelux ever made.

I think it was an original stock capsule.
The one it had before he replaced it was also stock, but just sounded like total crap. I'm guessing it had either seen some abuse in its lifetime or it was just a dud.
But yeah, it sounds fantastic now.

Oh, and he didn't have of the silver grilles in stock so I had him use a black one and it looks pretty damn cool.

Just out of curiosity, how come you didn't just send it back to David Bock @ Soundelux?
