Gonna be some nasty room modes whether you use a shipping container
or a yuppie shed. Would need to be real dead inside and even with near
fields you'd probably have some big lumps in the lo/lomids.

Sounds a lot better than the cab of my Honda Accord though! I've
made pretty good recordings in worse spaces.

I don't have the time really to build a space, (I barely have enough
time to record). So drag and drop looks pretty good to me. (Drag the thing
to your property and drop it on some empty space somewhere somewhere)

Hey maybe you could create a new business making Opsheds. A variation
on the Yupsheds as seen in Dwell. A modular recording studio trailer park
on your own back yard!

www.eheat.com

I have had good luck with those for temps like the ones you'd encounter in Mid-Coast Maine. Highly recommended. Put them on a simple light timer so they'll switch on a few hours before you need them.

Ha, when I first saw this thread I thought?Hey, I was going to try that once!? Didn?t occur to me this was my old post.

I didn?t end up partitioning the garage as *we* use it as a storage space, but I have a feeling there is a garage sale and a few car loads for goodwill in the offing this spring?

The spare room has been taken over for now. When Mom?s up, she sleeps in our daughters bed, and our daughter sleeps with us or grandma. Lots of DI tracking. V drums run mono through distressor for quick and dirty explosiveness, looking at that new ?Distressor killer?yellow faced fmr compressor to run kick and snare separately. Hamptone DI bass is great. Mesa Boogie studio pre sounds awesome with the recording outs. Looking towards getting a radial box and low wattage amp for reamping.

I think getting one of those Zoom H2, H4, H4n would be great. The Hamptone is soon to have a little DBX desktop compressor velcroed to it for a little remote rig for grabbing ideas quickly when the opportunity arises to use our many angled, high ceilinged livingroom. (..finally got an acoustic guitar, a Seagull mini jumbo) And if I can make enough room in the garage to park one car I could definitely see that as a late night vocal booth.

Ah, we musicians are a resourceful bunch..

Sorry about the long URL. Avett Brothers playing in a gondola at a ski area. I am posting here because the sound is interesting, being in such a small space and all. Those little gondola cars always drive me nadgers, actually, because they have such a weird acoustic thing with the conversation.

Ha!
That first picture looks so much like my life it's not even funny.

Embrace the chaos.

I actually used to have a space that was about the size of a storage shed or
a gondola. Even recorded live drums in there. The recordings aren't as bad
as they should have been!

I have access right now to a 48' reefer trailer, which could be had very cheap. It's very similar structurally to Mark's container studio, but I think a little roomier at 8' wide, with 8.5 ft ceilings. One could pretty much copy the plan used for the container studio, with slightly larger control and iso rooms, maybe a second iso room, leavingand have the remainder (~ 20') as a live area.

Obviously I can't park this thing in my driveway, so the first problem is finding a place to park it. The second is convincing my partner that it will work - actually, neither of us are convinced that such small rooms would be useful for recording rock. thoughts?

Is this like the "grow-op" you referenced previously? :D

Is this a trailer on wheels, kinda like mine?
If it is, keep in mind that the amount of weight you can put into it in terms of construction mass, i.e. sheetrock/drywall/gypboard/whatever-you-call-it-in-Canada, is dramatically less than what you can put into a shipping container that was designed to carry many extra tons of weight and be hauled on/by a many-wheeled tractor trailer.

I'm probably pushing the limits of what I should add on, weight-wise, and I have no expectations that the portion of the trailer I've designated for "isolation" will be as isolated as the proper sound construction techniques dictate.

Not to dissuade you. I should be loading my stuff into the trailer and starting to setup in about a week, so I'll be able to give you a better idea of how it's actually working out then. And if isolation isn't a problem for then, by all means....

It is on wheels... but a bigger brother to yours. "reefer" in this case means refrigerated. Like so:

Image

Steel framed floor, steel corner posts, and there may or may not be steel or aluminum studs spaced 4' ... there are wood studs at 12", I'm not sure what the dimensions are - the walls are about 3" thick.

And, yeah, plan B would be to drop it into a hole and turn it into a hydroponic garden. :) Which might finance a lot of recording gear, but I'm told that 4' x 8' cells have horrible acoustics. Or maybe I could turn it into a studio / garden all-in-one and wait for Snoop Dogg to come knocking.

Um... the major corrosion on the elbow of the copper pipe on the right-side of this photo is a bad thing. They either didn't sweat the joint well or didn't clean up the flux. We had a couple of those in our basement that definitely led to water leaks.

Just a heads up. Fix it now while you can!
