SCORED!!
I scored big on the EV RE-55 mic pair I inquired about in an earlier thread. I got the two mics in great condition along with each mic's data sheet, metal cases in gold hammerite finish, mic clips, two 50' Whirlwind cables, and a vintage EV mic catelogue all for $180. I'm still breathing into a bag over it...
The sound of these omni mics are quite cool. They have an up front, natural sound to them and such an extended frequency range (upper and lower) that it's somewhat hard to believe they are dynamic mics. I tried a quick comparison on drum OH with the Oktava o12 I usually use and a simple Sure 57 (just to get an idea of the diff.). The Oktava (with omni head) still had a bit more of the 3D clarity/shine you'd expect to hear in a condenser over a dynamic. However, the RE-55 has it's own merrits when subed for the traditional condenser position as OH. Something different and unique. It almost seemed that the way these mics tended to bring the source a bit more "upfront" means less compression is nessesary if any at all! It's nice that I can now consider a dynimic mic when making a choice for a task traditionally held by condensor mics. The 57 was rather boxy and undimentional (I'm sure due to the 57 being a cardioid, not omni)... I haven't yet tried them on acoustic guitar, but that should be a treat too. These RE-55 mics should be a fun pair to use and a great addition to my mic locker, and for under a hunderd each! What do these usually go for?
