distressor q: brit mode: waste of cash or important featur?

Post by joninc » Sat Feb 18, 2006 4:07 pm

so i am planning on buying a distressor and have one on trial right now
with the brit mode - at this point is seems like something i might not
use much (the brit mode) but it's also a pretty powerful compressor and i don't want to regret not having it - lots of times it takes me a while to really understand what a piece of gear is doing and to find the ways it works best etc..

i was hoping some of you who have a distressor with the brit mode can tell me:

a) do you use the Brit mode much?

b) where is it really a useful function?

thanks!!

I was just listening to the difference a few minutes ago and I was thinking that it sounds compressed even at 1:1 compared to it off..it makes the tone just slightly different..I could live without it..its not all that..its the tip of the iceberg with that machine really..

can you get a regular distressor with the stereo option - or does that only come on the BRIT mode ones?

There was a thread about this and someone eventually quoted a tech person from emperical labs stating that there is compression happening at 1:1 with units that have the Brit mod.

If I were you I'd definitely get the Brit Mode.

It's a nice option.
Doesn't work every time but when it works it sounds great.
I would definitely get it.

i find it can be the aggression switch when needed... not always the right thing, but when it is, it's great. Especially when an electric Bass needs to cut a little bit into the mix, it's great for that...a bunch of other uses as well... check out mercenary website for more info on some of its uses... i think it's worth it.

Whenever I want the distressor I use to freak out, I just put it on link mode without it linked to anything. TOTALLY freaks out. Or I will just use it at a low ratio and slam it.

The trick of making the detector freak out completely is a good one. The "open ended link mode" freak out is about as gnarly as I could get the thing to do....

I wouldnt bother with the brit mode, but whatever. It is not a deal breaker either way.... If you find one WITH it for a good price: get it. I never use it.

I use it with some frequency...sometimes it really helps something cut thru the mix. I wouldn't want the option taken away now that I have it!
