Today the G5 at studio G refused to open Pro Tools, it would only display the dreaded DAE error -1.
After trying all ye olde tricks to get Pro Tools to wake up, I
downloaded a super cool program called APPLEJACK at
http://applejack.sourceforge.net/
This is a shell script for cleaning up the mess left by system crashes: disk directory errors, buggy caches, corrupted preferences, etc.
Ran the script and was amazed...
This program really worked for us today.
After restarting, Pro tools opened and ran without a hitch.
Thank you Applejack and Tom Cassell for sharing this one.

do you fellas know of anything similar to this for PC/Windows platforms? i could really use it..

also, not to make a thread out of it, is there a way to use plugs destined for protools only with other programs? any kind of "emulator" or something of that kind out there? i would love to buy and be able to use the abbey road emi limiter (http://www.thomann.de/thoiw10_artikel-194160.html) with reaper..400 bucks, and i'm sure worth every cent.

thanks in advance!

hi ya'll

didn't see the mac duc pluggo link, so here it is, in it's 7 pages of glory
per aussie Simon666 including what's up for UB so far:

This is mentioned in that DUC Pluggo link, but I think it warrants highlighting here:

The Tapecho plug-in is a very cool, free, tape echo emulation available here:

http://www.geometricdeck.org/tools/list/

You set the delay time (or just sync to host tempo), and then select among delay-time multipliers, from 0.5 to 32. When it switches from one multiplier to another, it makes that zippy tape sound. Yum! You can adjust the amount of tape saturation, wow and flutter, the whole deal.

You'll need to install Pluggo first, but that's free from here:
http://www.cycling74.com/downloads/pluggo

Note that the current version of Pluggo, 3.6, is not compatible with Pro Tools 6.4... I think not with any versions of PT 6. For that, click on the "Older Mac Versions" link and install Pluggo version 3.5.4.

There's a thread that includes the current official lsit of Pluggo 3.6 supported hosts:
http://www.cycling74.com/forums/index.php?t=msg&goto=83365

Cheers,
Leigh

Just found this, haven't gotten a chance to try it out yet:

http://www.fluxhome.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=blogcategory&id=71&Itemid=79

The "Bitter Sweet" is a freeware transient shaper from Flux. It includes an MS matrix for optionally affecting only center or side information. Looks pretty cool, but can't vouch for it yet.

RTAS and VST available now; AudioUnit still in developement.

Edit: I have to temper my enthusiasm a bit for this plug-in: it seems to not be compatible with Pro Tools 6.4, and nowhere is this mentioned on their site. Since you have to sign up and verify your email account to download this plug-in, it means 10-15 minutes of shennanigans until the thing is installed. A bummer to find out at the end of it all that it's not showing up in Pro Tools.

Here's another free one, looks cool but I haven't actually tried it yet:

http://www.shuriken.se/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=23&Itemid=35

It's called Berrtill, it's VST only (Mac/Windoze), and it is "a distortion unit modelled from circuit bent hardware." It has a pretty freaky looking interface.

another freebie but in AU format:

"SonicBirth is an AudioUnit designing application. The first in its category, it allows users to build their own AudioUnit plugins, either by working with existing circuits or by creating circuits completely from scratch. SonicBirth is also a free AudioUnits package, as it comes bundled with a set of plugins designed for standalone use as plugins as well as pre-constructed circuits to modify or build upon for creating new plugins. Whether you're looking for traditional eqs, compressors, and reverbs, or softsynths, distortion, and filters, etc., SonicBirth allows you unprecedented freedom and creativity over your sound."

I find it hard to believe no one has mentioned Antress. Unless I missed it, here is the link:

Damn, those Antress plugs look so juicy they may push me over the edge into a cheap wintel machine to run them. Looks like no mac versions.

Does anyone know if there is any way to convert Win VST to Mac VST?

wishful thinking.

I cannot get those Antress plugs to work in Sonar. They make a horrible choppy sound, like a cd skipping. I've tried re-downloading and re-installing. They work for a minute or two, then sonic hell breaks loose. anyone know why?

Would anyone be into taking this post and reorganizing the links by category (i.e. Compressors, EQs, Rev etc) into one big post for ease of use?

I got a plug in that you can add to a snare... and it can pretty much make the weakest of snares sounds super phat, punchy, and have a good attack. you can also use it on bass to beef it up and get it hard hitting. or for vocals to get an AWESOME distorted sound.

http://www.camelaudio.com/camelcrusher.php

I got it on a disk a long time ago when i bought a firepod and it's seriously my most life saving plugin besides drumagog. And even then.. this plugin has saved my drum sounds a lot more than drumagog, even with the amazing steven slate library!

Please download it and put it on some of yalls rock sessions snare drum and see what magic it can do!
