Post by operator_tape » Thu Feb 23, 2006 6:27 pm

I really like how full these mics sound, take them over a md 421 any day? Am I crazy?

I've got D2's and D4's on toms and am very happy too.

oh yeah, I used the D3 for some horns too - tenor sax and trumpet and it held its own.

got to try with the d2 on the bottom snare, see if it helps the sm 57 on top a little bit.

Maybe...maybe not.

I had a bunch of d2 and I'd use them on toms a bunch for a while. Then I'd use the 421s and think, wow those other records would have sounded cooler with these. I sold 3 of the 4 d2s I had.

YMMV

I think a bigger help to you 57 on the SD is not using a 57 on the SD...

I like D2s/D3s and MD421s on toms...depending on the kit/style/player. Also, the D6 can be great on some kits/styles. Never tried the D1 after hearing some less-than-steller reviews so I can't comment directly there.

The D2 really does have a great sound when it works.

As for snare...there are so many snare sounds out there, it really depends, but for that really snappy crack of rock drums, I am digging the Shure Beta56 on the top and the Sennheiser MD441 on the bottom. A match made it heaven! For less "snap", I go with the Beyer M201 on top...rich and full, lots of low mids, but not as much snap.

I have a blue baby bottle but I am afraid of putting it next to the snare for spl reasons. Should I go for it or no.
