New power supply for my console?

Post by h7 » Thu Feb 23, 2006 10:33 pm

How much difference do you suppose a new power supply for my A&H System 8 would make? I have the original one, works fine, but have heard about people getting new ones after a while (I guess this one could be near 20 years old by now). Do they start to die like tubes?

I dont know anything about the old A&H p/s's.

BUT.....

Getting a rock solid Acopian power supply for my custom console, AND for the Neve sidecar REALLY made a difference.

YMMV.

this would also be great in the DIY section, i'm sure brian roth can fill us in w/some real knowledge (as opposed to my sorta speculation/half-truths).

my very limited understanding is it's mostly due to power caps aging and therefore letting less than perfectly clean DC come out on the output side.

instead of buying a totally brand new you could

a) have someone "rebuild" yours.
b) build your own.

i'm in the proces of building one for a sound workshop console, and it's pretty easy if you just buy stock linear supplies. basically get the right parts, put them in a box and put a switch/fuse/etc. it's coming in somewhere about $250 or so in parts i guess.
