Not to be a dork, but I'd have to ask: what's the application?

I'm typing this as a bassist rehearses takes through my Presonus MP20. I love it, but I would love the Avalon even more.

Wurd..
I didnt even really like the sound of DI bass until I got a U5 a few years ago... like when they came out. Now I cant stop recording direct. I dont use a pre with this thing, just straight to tape or PT (whatever).

Groove Tubes Ditto. I scored mine when a bunch of us did on blowout a while back. I think GC fucked up on the price or something. . .
anyways, sounds great and lots of nice slightly-colored gain, especially from 9-10.

the first DI I ever liked is my TL Audio "Dual Valve Mic Pre-Amp/ DI"
It is grey and looks sorta home made. You might be able to find one on the cheap.
not to worry, just keep tracking....

Because everybody keeps saying that they're good?
I dunno, I guess I'll have to borrow the one at work if it ever comes back from rentals.
But my best bang-for-the-buck DI (for my own bass, at the least) is the EWI active LDB-101 - $50, plus shipping from Audiopile.

demeter and the summit TD100. the groove tubes brick (i think that's what it's called) sounds pretty nice on bass. the avalon is nice if you engage the tone shaping knob, although it just means committing a little more to your sound. the countrymen is also kind of an industry standard-- especially for live use, but i'm no fan.

I've got an old UTC A-11 wired as a DI. It's impedance is 50K to 200 ohms. There are always old tube mic pre transformers on ebay with similar specs, and they sound great. Easy to hook up, too.
