Good cymbal stand to hold a floor tom?

Post by honkyjonk » Fri Mar 03, 2006 5:43 pm

I have a new 15" Gretsch tom I need to mount on something, and seeing as how I need another cymbal stand too, I thought I might ask if there's somthing that fits both bills.

Anyway, the Gretch mount has a 1/2" diameter hole in case somone happens to know a particularly heavy duty stand w/ a 1/2" diameter on the stem.

???

I'd recommend getting a multi-clamp and mount the tom holder off the cymbal stand. something like this:

just make sure the stand can hold the extra weight. most heavy duty stands can.

Well,

Yeah, those things look pretty cool, but if everything is female, I'm kind of back where I started. Are there some metal connection penises or something?

i guess making sure the stand can stand the weight goes without saying.

Ahhhhh, drum hardware madness!!!! It's almost like software compatability.

here's a bunch. 1/2" is a strange size. is this an older tom/mount? I know Pearl (and many others) is 7/8". Gibralter makes a bunch of "clones" but haven't seen 1/2". is it a vertical or horizontal post? the new ones say they use a 12.7mm mount and I think Gibralter has one.

Gretsch toms (at least the current & recent models) are directly compatible with Gretsch hardware (obviously) as well as Gibraltar and DW hardware. I just bought a new Gretsch kit and bought two DW-9000 double tom stands to hold up the four toms. They also make a stand for one tom & one cymbal, two toms and one cymbal, or two cymbals and one tom.

does the hole accept a hinged tube type mount or an L-Rod type mount.

Gibralter makes 12.7mm L-rod clamps, which work out to .5"
musicians friend doesnt always advertise all the gizmos that drum companies makes, you might have to take a trip to banjo mart.

Shiza,

I shouldn't have said "new." I recently got it, so it's new for me, but it's actually a stop sign badge Gretsch tom.

Here's a pic:

So, as you can see, the mount looks pretty small. The diameter of the hole is .5"

That's certainly an older-style of mount, but the sizing looks to be about the same as the current designs. I'd expect that you'll still be able to use DW or Gibraltar.

Hiya.If you are buying a stand to hang a 15" tom from, I reccommend get the biggest scariest heavy stand you can find that fits - I don't hang toms like that as a rule, just because they always seem to end up bending and buckling the stand slightly (or not so slightly). Not to make myself seem more important than i am, I work in the biuggest independant drum store in Northwest UK, been here 6 years, and own a coupla kits of various sorts, and deal with all our kits for hire etc, so this thing is my bag. If you can get a stand that accepts the tom arm directly in place of the higher piece of tubing and boom arm (sounds like you're after that already),that's better, though a regular stand of any diameter plus a normal tom arm and a multiclamp will work. You could also put it in a snare stand, depends on how deep the drum is and how low you need it to go. I always carry two snare stands with me when my bands play gigs with a shared kit, so when I turn up and it's hanging 14" tom and the guy says I can't move the F'n tom mount, I just take it off the mount and stick it in a snare stand, do the same with rack toms if needed (I only play 4 piece kits ususally, if it's 5 it'll be two floor toms with legs).

You could also go a different route - buy a pearl ISS mount, it clamps onto your top hoop, fits a regular pearl tom arm (which'll go in a pearl cymbal stand/tom stand). Not cheap, but a tidy solution, and easy to remove etc.

Hope this helps, nice drum that gretsch 15;-p

Take it easy,

Paul
