my furman IT1220 is buzzing....

Post by JohnDavisNYC » Sun Mar 05, 2006 9:28 am

or humming, rather... quite disconcerting, so i've powered down my system... is this really bad? a result of possibly poor power due to construction in my building today? it sucks... it is loud enough to be distracting, like a really loud computer fan or something... at first i thought the fan in my G5 was freaking it, but turns out it's the big balanced power supply.

shit.

any help or good jokes would be appreciated.

got an email back from furman already... said not to worry... talk about customer service...
The IT-1220's can hum if there is enough junk on the AC line. We in fact
replaced the IT-1220 this year with the new version (IT-20 II) that uses
our new low noise transformers that are dead quite. The two things that
cause these transformers to hum is excessive DC voltage on the line or a
clipped 60 Hz sine wave. Construction causes the sine wave to clip due
to the power demands that are not of normal condition. I bet if you went
outside the transformers on the power poles are louder then usual
(assuming your power is above ground). This hum can be heard from the
chassis or fifteen feet away depending on how bad the power is. I would
not be concerned about the unit failing this is normal under such
conditions. If you want us to look at it, just let me know but I do not
believe it would solve anything at this time. In the meantime perhaps
you can move the IT-1220 into another room for isolation until the
construction is done. We may be able to mod your unit with the new
transformers when we get them in stock but they will not be available
for months.

Let me know if you have any more questions.
