I have the original one, the "mono tube reference mic pre" which was made by VTL. That era of Manley.

I use that pre for so many things it is ridiculous. One of my favorite pre's bar none. I have come to rely on that thing quite a bit.

A dual-mono version at a friend's studio was the first quality preamp I ever used. It blew me away, in terms of clarity and quality. My interpretation was weighted by factors of inexperience, like only hearing 002r preamps in a perfectly square, untreated room. However, the entire studio was equipped with Manley gear, the voxbox, massive passive, variable-mu, elop....and, holy shit, did those chains sound beautiful. Whether or not the "sound" of the mono pre's are for you is up to personal preference, but I am rather sure that you would not be let down by overall quality in sonics and build.
