nortronics?

A friends father is trying to sell me a Nortronics RA100.Is this a good mic pre?I cant find out anything on the web. Whats it worth?Any help would be appreciated greatly. By the way Ive been lurking on this site for about a year and Ive learned alot from you guys, But have had troubles logging in until now.

I don't know about that pre but I do know that nortronics made tape heads and transformers for Ampex. My guess is that if they're good enough for ampex they're probably pretty decent.

he only wants $150 for two of them.One is broken and the other supposedly works.

I could spend $150 on a night out that I wouldn't even remeber the next day. Go for it.

I have two of them. Got the first for cheap, liked it so much I got another. They are discrete tube pres, point to point wiring. They have 3 12ax7s and a rectifier or something-- one of the 12ax7s is for the eq circuit (phono) so you don't need it... so you can take that out and use it for something else or keep it as a spare. These are really nice sounding pres with tons of gain and very low noise.

I heard the recordings ubertar did with his and I liked the sound a lot..

That was with a b&k mic, so YMMV, but I like these a lot with any condenser, or ribbon, or dynamic...

thanks for the info guys.Bargain? maybe ,, but its gotsta be better than the firepod pre's im using now.(which are decent)
just got back from an antiques dealer who sold me a Beyer m260 for 20 bucks and a shure bullet for 10.Happy days for a broke dude.

as a consolation, There are a pair of Beyer m260's on ebay right now for 86 dollars.Time is almost up on em.
