I don't think I'm good but I can sometimes hold a pitch now!

The biggest factor for me was quitting smoking.

Second, lots of practice. As in LOTS of practice. Daily me and a guitar practicing.

I went from a bad singer to fairly decent singer using this warm up book. It really helped a lot learning proper techniques and strengthening your muscles the right way- i.e, not fighting each other.
It's intended as a warmup before actually singing, but it was a brutal workout for me for a year or so doing it a couple times a week. There are a bunch of books/cd's like it out there and I'd highly recommend them.

practicing to a keyboard as opposed to a guitar everyday helped me tremendously. When playing a chord (any) practice singing the separate notes in really relaxed "la"'s. a few weeks later you'll be amazed. and it's free.

My voice has grown a ton better just from me doing warm up exercises when I drive. Also, the more you learn to listen (to your own and to other's singing...live and recorded) the better you'll get.

It's learnable, I think...and you'll definitely improve with practice. You won't become a Freddie Mercury, but you'll get better...and if you're wise, you'll learn to love your voice for what it can do.

Thanks for the warm up book....I'll have to try that out.

A trick I learned was to plug one ear when your driving around singing along with your favorite songs.

Right now the Spinal Tap line "a bit too much bloody perspective" is coming to mind.

Once you're able to sing in key I think the hardest part is getting in the right state of mind...Someone once told me "if you're gonna sell it you better own it first"

Then theres the people who open their mouths and a beautiful sound just falls out.....Gerrr!!! bastards!!

that itself is a wise statement! I'm not a "great" singer but I love that there are some things that I can just nail. There must be tons of famous frontmen out there who are really terrible singers, but they just "found" their own voice and rocked it till the wheels fell off.

I took voice lessons for one semester in college as an elective. The first thing the instructor had me do was say "HEY, JON!" like he was 100 yards away. The lesson? Use the air your lungs give you. Practice singing loudly and cleanly. Remember what it feels like when you're trying to project your voice over a great distance and keep goin for that, it will help you learn what singing "feels like." Sorry if that's a little bit yoda-ish...but help you it can. =) And of course as people have said, practice makes perfect and it helps to practice with an instrument, even if you just pluck one note and try to hold that note as well as you can as long as you can.

*edit* p.s. - don't be afraid to belt out some backstreet boys tunes...in your car with the windows rolled up. =P No one will know, and you don't have to tell anyone what you're doing...it's safe I promise! haha

The best singers have the worst voices - Tom Waits, Stevie Wonder, etc. They had to put a lot into their singing to get past not having one of those perfect voices, and as a result they're a lot more interesting to listen to.

I took a few voice lessons and did a lot of practicing, and it definitely paid off. These days I tend to do most of it while driving, which is bad because I don't have a keyboard or other pitch reference, but still worth doing. Sometimes I do scales, mostly I work on songs by going through really slow working to nail each and every note. The "alphabet song" is a good one, and very hypnotic by the time you've sung it 40-50 times in a row. Shocked
