does your studio have a myspace?

Post by surf's up » Wed May 10, 2006 11:14 pm

Im not talking about like if you run Ocean Way or something, but more for those of us in that in-between transitional phase going from hobby to doing this to make a little cash and help out the local trashcore bands now and then. Is it at all an effective networking tool or has it proven to be just a waste of time?

I don't think I've run into any new clients from it, but many of my clients are my "friends" so it makes it easy to keep "networked" with them.

I have had a myspace page (here) for my studio for quite some time and I find it to be very useful.

When things are slow I can search bands in the region, check them out, send them messages and get the word out about the studio. You can also post bulletins, it's fast and easy to update, etc. The sound quality of the streaming audio is just awful though, so I make sure people understand it's for "music appreciation" only. I am planning on posting links to MP3s on my website.

Overall I think it's great for exposure, networking and keeping in touch with clients. I also make sure that I keep it as "business" as possible. I only accept requests from bands, labels, other studios and fans of bands that I've recorded. If "Sexy Horny Bitch 666" sends me a request I will deny it.

Our studio, online venue and band are very closely related. We recently joined myspace, so it will be a couple weeks or months before we really know how much it helps.

But even lacking real experience, I still have an opinion :-) I think myspace is useful if you actively like to network, find people who genuinely share your interests, listen to similar music, etc. I don't think posting your profile (by itself) does much good unless you are an active networker.

I've had tons of Myspace business. But then again I deal with hardcore/punk/metal ...mostly young kids cutting their first demo.

I have one that I'm just getting off the ground and I really want to switch it to a musical site so I can directly post sound files. Do you guys have personal or music sites? Do you know how to switch them? Do you wanna be friends?

I have a myspace page that is devoted to my freelance producer/engineer work. I used to focus more on my studio but I don't have one anymore. So now it's all about me.

There are links to a bunch of bands I've worked with and some songs I've done on there too.

yea I also basically just use it for keeping in touch with past clients and the occasional fellow gameboy musician.

Why not? It can help consolidate networking and build community
