Black Lion 002r Sound Samples A/B before-after

Post by Red Rockets Glare » Fri May 19, 2006 11:17 am

Hey folks,
I just got my 002r back from Matt at Black Lion and it's killer. I have an un-modded 002r that I am borrowing from a friend that I am going to do some A/B tests with this weekend, and was wondering if anyone could lend me some webspace to host the 24bit, 44.1 .wav files.
PM me if you're up for it.
Cheers,
Raymond

Ever tried "YouSendIt.com"? file transfer up to like 1 gig or something crazy like that.

They'll give you a link you can send to whomever.

Dude, those soundbytes we recorded with Chris.... hilarity!!

I'd rather post on a fellow TapeOppers site.

You and your sneaky record-finger.

Very nice. I can't wait to hear the samples. I'm planning on upgrading my newly purchased 002R as well.

Did you go all out and get the converters and clock upgraded?

I got two of my motu hd192's modded at Black Lion Audio. The sound difference is night and day!

My main question is: if it takes months to get your gear back that you send to Black Lion, how do you record in the meantime?

I'm only asking because I'm interested in cranking my 002 to make it sound better... but I don't know how I would get any music stuff done for 2-3-? months.

Luck for me, I had a friend that has an 002r for live sound stuff and he let me borrow it for a few weeks.
I'm sure you can keep your 002r until the week Matt schedules your upgrade, and then it's only out for about 2-3 weeks.
It's soometimes good to take a little break.

and now....

You can do what I am planning on doing... Buy a second interface, have Matt mod your main one, then A/B. You can always eBay the second interface after the fact.

I'm in the same boat, as I am currently working on two full lengths, an EP, and a song for a compilation. I can't afford to be without my 828mkii, so I'm going to pick up a second, upgrade, A/B, and then sell the second interface for a Sytek MPX-4Aii w/Burr-Brown on Chs. 3-4. I figure that once I can use the analog i/o, my Digimax LT is going to go as well for another Sytek or a stereo pre.

Just plan on putting out a little bit more money if you can't take a break.

002r Mod Samples

Post by Red Rockets Glare » Mon May 22, 2006 9:38 am

here are the soundfiles folks.

I hope they satisfy your questions about the quality difference in the upgrade. They certainly make my ears a lot happier.

I had the full upgrade listed here done to my 002r.

The biggest thing I noticed when I plugged my modded 002r in for the first time was PUNCH. My rig actually sounded ANGRY at me. It is punchy like really good digital should be. The dynamic range of the unit seems to be quite improved as well.
The converters are good, I have yet to decide if I like them more than the Apogee Mini-Me converters yet, but I like the modded 002r clock MUCH more.

The tests I included are;

Kick and Overhead through the unmodded 002r using it's preamps

Kick and Overhead through the modded 002r using it's modded preamps

Kick and Overhead through the unmodded 002r using SCA A12 preamps

Kick and Overhead through the modded 002r using SCA A12 preamps

Kick and Overhead through the modded 002r using the Apogee Mini-Me's converters using SCA A12 preamps

These are 24bit 48 Hz Soundfiles

Below are the photos of how the mics were set up in the session and the two 002r's

The mics used were a 2001 Royer modded Tube Mic on the Overhead and an AKG D112 on the Kick.

I'd suggest loading these files into your multitrack software to listen to.

Let me know if you have any questions, and thanks so much to Matt for the fantastic mod and to Bret for the webspace!

Can't wait to hear these when I get home tonight!

You didn't happen to record any vocals or acoustic (or electric) guitar did you?

I did try those, but they didn't make the changes as apparent as the drum tracks did.
