Best Sci Fi Movies 1990-Today

Post by eeldip » Thu May 15, 2003 10:33 am

so this matrix reloaded thing has gotten me a thinkin, how many good sci fi movies have come out recently (time period defined above).

all i can come up with is:

12 monkeys
starship troopers
city of lost children
donnie darko

any others? (matrix doesnt count, minority report was almost a good movie- if it wasnt for that ending)

5th element (common! tricky and mila in the same movie!)

....what was that cool movie with Ethan Hawk and Uma?
the one that had a ton of mid-century modernism stuff in it?
that was a great 'vibe' sci-fi movie!

a great way to spend 5 or so bucks is to get the battlefield earth DVD and listen to the commentary. they keep talking about how history will view this as one of the great sci fi movies of all time.. and how great the acting and the writting is... lots of fun.

and the postman, another favorite: i cant decide what i like better, that scene with the boy where kevin triumphantly delivers the mail to him in slow mo while riding a horse. or the fact that the movie stars tom petty as.. himself, the leader of a post apocalyptic dam.

oh and by the way, everybody is a hater on AI: Artificial Intelligence (all because supposedly spielberg "ruined" kubrick's vision)... but I adored that movie. Yup, even the ending!! people in the theater were making fun of it, saying how gay the kid was and what a faggot film this was. i dunno. i loved it. jerks.

yeah I agree. I can really get into a movie and i hate when people hate. :? Some people cant understand the multiple layers, but there is more to a movie than what you see. My girlfriend just insists that I'm a movie dork. BUT she is jealous because I get it.

I thought AI was about 20 minutes too long. Other than that I though it was good. As far as the whole debate...over Kubrick vs. Speilberg...well we'll never really know if it "ruined his vision" cause...well...he's dead. I know I'm glad it was still released as opposed to being buried with kubrick.

Mystery Science Theater 3000 rocks!

Damn you, Blue! I saw this thread earlier, but didn't get a chance to post; when I returned you had stolen the words right out of my mouth. I loved AI. I was the only person I knew who liked it. I thought it was amazing. I also really liked Minority Report.
Was Vanila Sky sci-fi? I would say so: it attempts to describe the human condition by placing humans outside of the constraints of this world. That's sci-fi. I liked that as well.
