How could they possibly have proven that it is impossible? Maybe they just didn't TRY hard enough.

I never said they proved it's impossible, I just said they couldn't get it to work. There's definitely stuff they coulda done different.

first off, this was based on some X-Files episdoe where they used a laser to play a recording off the side of an ancient clay pot, and I guess there are folks out there who think similar sounds of the ancient world are encoded in artifacts for us to find...

They fashioned a glass needle 'cause they thought a metal needle would be too sharp, then they dragged what looked like wooden sticks across the surface of the pot while yelling things at it. Kinda seemed like they hadn't quite done all the research they could have about "grooves-in-things" recording. They put the glass needle on a turntable's tone arm, and then held it against the pot while turning it, and recorded the resulting noise to DV tape. Which they then took to an audio restoration guy, who couldn't seem to find anything below the noise.

It seems like there's plenty they coulda done differently, and theoretically it also seems like you could record a sound into just about any substance if it could maintain a stable groove...but what about the flaking-off that pottery does? Would it have to be a glazed pot?

I dunno.

I have a mackie 1604 mixer, a 57, and ...that's it. Guitar, amp, fx pedal, drumset, computer.

For chrissakes, I use a 5 year old Celeron machine for my DAW, with a cheapass Creative USB interface that picks up hard drive spins from 3 rooms away. I should be able to test Tracktion's claim that they're easy on CPU usage.

Can someone right up an article about the Mackie Satalite for www.wikiRecording.org ? I'd do it if I got a free one, but alas, the sites not popular enough to garner such attention yet. Give me a year or two though (particularly when I'm out of college) and it should be blazin (we get about 200 users a day normally, and thats with me being very very lazy about advertising and adding content.)

Great chance to give something back to the copy-left community!
