A few weeks ago I was doing some heavy-duty emergency fixin' to the console, late at night, by myself, and tired (the latter being the likely cause of what I will describe...)
I was sitting on the floor near the door to the playing room, and distinctly heard a male voice count off "two! three!".
YIPES.
One second flat I'm in the middle of the control room, away from the doorway, holding my breath and listening.
I stood still for over a minute. Nothing. So I walked back over to where I was to resume working and heard it... "four!"
Back into the middle of the control room, trying to figure out if I was going to get anything else done that night (and I had to get the console back up before the next morning...)
I didn't hear anything else odd that night.
Others who work at my studio have made mention of odd noises, front-panel lights on gear going out (and the gear still running) etc, etc...
Happy Halloween, everyone. _________________ he took a duck in the face at two and hundred fifty knots.

This isnt really a studio but regardless, a haloween story for this thread.
Where I used to go to high school, there was this "spot" that everyone would go to. It basically consisted of a road surrounded by trees, no streetlights, right next to this little lake, and you can see the other side of the lake.
My brother and his friend were driving down to go smoke there or something, in a caravan, cause they both needed their cars for some reason. These werent common cars, it was an oldass mercury grand marquis...i think an 87, and a red volvo station wagon from like 1990. so they pulled over in some place in the road where you could see the other side, and they both immediately saw a big glow in the distance, sopposedly shaped like a person, and more coming. They got freaked out because that place has had soooo many ghost stories told about it before, and they decided to jet as fast as they could. They both got out of their cars, and as they pulled away, the lights dissapeared and they saw on the other side a reflection of their cars driving, exact same cars, exact same, one in front of the other. Except it wasnt the water reflecting, it was on the other side, the saw the road it was on and they said it was too distinct to be a reflection. Keep in mind that they hadnt smoked yet..so that rules that out.
Another time a couple of my friends decided they were gonna be badass and sleep out in that spot. So they pulled in and tried to go to sleep. within a few minutes, there was a huge metal scraping on the bottom of the car. huge, loud, metallic sound scrapping on their car. They tore out of there and looked back to see a large shadow of a person standing right where their car was parked.

OK, what I want is mp3 clips of weird and/or creepy sounds you have accidentally captured on tape. It's OK to just make some shit up, as far as I'm concerned.
Thanks for bringing this back, Chris! _________________ New album out now! clicky |

In high school I was in a Ska band. We rented a space above the newspaper office. The sax player and I were putting down the horn parts on our 4-track demo. We both had headphones on and we just finisheda song and as I was walking back to the closet to hit stop. There was a womans voice that came over the phones and said a few faint words. It was very distinct but we couldn't make it out. We both kind of paused and looked at each other. I figured it was just something screwy with the tape so we run the tape back and play it and there is nothing. Hit stop and there's the exact same voice again. We just left. Didn't put our horns away didn't turn anything off just got the hell out and drove home as fast as we could.
This one is music related but not studio related. I lived behind the Jr. High that we went to. It's and old 3 story brick building that was erected in 1903. We were hanging out smoking on my front porch one weekend and I swear we heard part of "Iron Man" coming from the gym area of the school. My friend and I walk over and when we get there we don't hear "Iron Man" any more but we distinctly hear "Bodies" by the Sex Pistols. It's faint and we had to be really quiet but we both heard it and could make it out perfectly. After that we got that creepy cold feeling and ran our asses off back to my house. This wasn't in a "hey man, let's go" it was completely independent that we both started hauling ass. About two weeks later my friend's sister was at his house and he was playing "Bodies" on the guitar. His sister, about 15 years older, commented that they had a band one of the school dances and they played that song. The school dances were in the gym. _________________ justinpenney.com |

I work at a haunted club, here in DC.
Apparently there are three separate ghosts in the building... one who likes to hang out in the green room, one who looks thru the windows on the doors to the main stage area and one who makes appearances in the elevator we use to load gear.
It can get pretty unnerving in there when I'm by myself fixing monitors...
To top it off, there's only one window in the main stage area and it casts an eerie half-light that's creepy all on it's own... I make sure to turn on all the stage lights and house lights when I'm by myself. I've seen a ghost before and I don't wanna see another one! |

I've got a haunted Fostex X-12. Yeah - it's very weird. Like, I'll be recording something on track 1 (say), then when I play back with the faders up, whoah! There's (not so very) faint noises on tracks 2 & 3!! And not just that either. I'll be recording something - on any track, doesn't matter - then when I listen back it's as though there's pitch shifting going on!! AND THERE IS NO TAPE SPEED ADJUSTER ON THE X-12!!! omgwtfbbq. Total ghosts in the machine. _________________

Not really from the otherworld but everytime a cockroach goes skittering by my feet or runs away from some item I'm reaching for it scares the living sh*t right out of me. Far worse than any ghosts could do... Unfortunately this happens quite often.
I'm going to name my studio "The Roach Motel" I swear... |

i have seen "shadow people" in the studio I work at. Seems that its when I am there alone though. I swear I see someone walking by the window that looks out into the live room, out of the corner of my eye.
the house engineer/owner has told me its haunted and said a producer who frequents has some stories as well but I have never inquired. now I must!!! _________________ boom-ptch-boom |

My Ghost Story - ( Non music related).
3 days after my brother and new sister-in-law (SIL) were married, one of her cousins from the wedding was killed in a car accident. My SIL was devistated...The day after the funeral we were at their house having lunch. All of us were downstairs talking. My SIL was upstairs in the bedroom resting and crying when her dead cousin appeared in her bedroom and said " I'm ok, don't worry"..My SIL said at that time a peacefullness came over her and she stopped crying and realized that everything was ok...when she came downstairs we could see her facial expression and mood had changed, but when she told us what happened we all just kinda looked around and went.......( Insert twilight zone music)...My brothers and I have a weird sense of humor...but to this day she claims it's true and her story never changes.... |

You guys are creeping me the fuck out.
| Quote: | | The second was editing something at three in the morning (actually, I found out later he was recording himself singing "Careless Whisper". Nevermind.) when the Masterlink CD tray started ejecting and closing all by itself. |
What self-respecting ghost would NOT put a stop to that kind of behavior?
I have potato bugs living in my studio. Way worse than ghosts. _________________ "All energy flows in accordance with the whims of the great Magnet"

As much as I'd like to believe in ghosts, you're all nuts. Think about the typical ghost story. It invariably starts in one of these ways:
"So, I know this guy..."
"I heard that in this one place..."
"It was really late at night and I..."
"I was sleeping and..."
"I was in this really creepy old building..."
"The tape started making weird noises..."
To which I say:
Hearsay
Hearsay
You were very tired
You were dreaming
You were predispositioned to be scared
Your 20 year old tape machine is probably busted
I believe that some people honestly believe in ghosts, but I also believe that there's a lot of bullshitters and gullible people out there, and more than a few people that have ghosts inside their own heads, if you know what I mean
Sorry kids, but when you die, your rot. There's no afterlife to make all this wretchedness worthwhile, and there are no ghosts. _________________ Deadtide.com : A Home for All Things Heavy

A few years ago while recording a TV score, I was at the piano playing a Victorian thing. I looked up in the middle of the take and saw the engineer's face was pale white. Just as I was about to stop and ask her "what was wrong", I noticed the reflection in the glass. A woman in full victorian dress was standing behind me. I was out of the booth before the sustain pedal was up. I asked the engineer what she'd seen. She described the woman, without prompting.
True Story. |
