Re: Audio Production Lab at Seattle Art Institue
I could say a few words having graduated Seattle AI and a private university. I went through the Seattle program at a rapid pace and was unable to book any quality length of studio time in the analog rooms. I was able to get copious amounts of ProTools, Avid Mediacomposer, and tons of great live sound time at NAF productions. It's a good program. Full of the kind of grit that you expect working in the real recording and sound world. You'll definitely get out of it what you put into it. I know a couple of guys around the Northwest who might tell you the same. I will say with the utmost honesty that I learned the most working with the AI instructors, all of whom are very, very good at what they do.
But school is school and for the $18K you might spend on an art degree you could very well lock out a studio for a month or two and hire a really good engineer to teach you everything they know. Even better you could make one or a few kickass albums with that money. All in all it's a serious financial comittment.
If you're determined to go to school look at the widest range of choices. Even Carnegie Mellon has a program...

Thanks Peter.
My opinion, the school keeps getting better and better. Peter is correct, for nearly 35K you must put your heart in or you won't get much out of it. Audio engineering is not for the timid or uncommitted.

Hi Tom
Nice to see you here on the board.
I was a 1999 graduate.
On the other hand, I got plenty of time in the analog studios and recorded my band first record there as part of my graduation requirement. The studios are very nice IMO, I got spoiled with nice gear and nice mics.
The instructors are great. I learned a lot form them, I learned a lot from Tom actually. As always, you get out what you put in.
Nico- You can get financial aid. That is how I did it.
